Dentsu India is facing fresh regulatory scrutiny after the Income Tax Department searched premises linked to the advertising and communications group across four Indian cities on September 1.
The searches in Mumbai, Delhi, Chennai and Bengaluru come against the backdrop of a separate ₹522.8 crore claims dispute disclosed by Dentsu and earlier regulatory investigations involving its Indian operations.
Authorities have not yet publicly disclosed the specific transactions or amount of tax allegedly involved in the September searches.
Income Tax Searches Four Cities
The Income Tax Department conducted searches on September 1 at premises linked to Dentsu Media Group in Mumbai, Delhi, Chennai and Bengaluru, according to The Economic Times. The department’s investigation concerns a suspected tax-evasion case, but details about the alleged evasion have not been publicly disclosed.
The Economic Times reported that search warrants were issued to 20 companies connected with Dentsu’s India operations, including Dentsu Aegis Network India, Dentsu Network Advertising, Dentsu Advertising and Media Services India, Dentsu Communications India, Dentsu Marketing Solutions, Dentsu Media India and Dentsu One. The report said the information came from people familiar with the matter.
That distinction is important. A search by the Income Tax Department is an investigative action. It does not, by itself, establish that tax evasion occurred or determine the amount of any eventual tax demand.
As of September 2, Dentsu had not publicly disclosed findings from the searches, while reporting said the company had not immediately responded to requests for comment.
What The ₹522.8 Crore Means
The latest searches have drawn attention to a separate matter already disclosed by Dentsu Group.
In its FY2025 disclosures, Dentsu said certain matters concerning transactions entered into by one of its Indian subsidiaries had been investigated with assistance from external legal and professional advisers. The group said it reported the findings to appropriate Indian regulatory authorities.
Dentsu subsequently said it received claims totalling ₹5,228 million, or ₹522.8 crore, from parties seeking payment for goods and services they claimed had been provided to the subsidiary.
Dentsu rejected those claims. According to the company’s disclosure, it disputed the substance of the underlying transactions and believed that no bona fide goods or services had actually been provided. It therefore did not recognise a liability for the ₹522.8 crore claims. The company also said investigations were continuing and that it was cooperating with authorities.
The figure should therefore not be described as a confirmed tax liability, proven fraud amount or established loss. It is the value of claims that Dentsu says it has rejected.
Earlier Regulatory Cases Differ
Dentsu’s latest Income Tax scrutiny follows other regulatory matters, but those cases concern different issues.
In December 2024, the Enforcement Directorate searched 19 locations in Mumbai, Delhi and Gurugram as part of its investigation into the Suumaya-Dentsu matter. The agency alleged that entities involved had embezzled ₹137 crore.
The advertising group has also faced scrutiny from India’s competition regulator. In March 2025, the Competition Commission of India searched offices linked to major advertising agencies including Dentsu as part of an investigation into suspected coordination over advertising fees and discounts.
What Happens Next
The immediate question is what evidence the Income Tax Department finds and whether the searches lead to further proceedings, tax demands or other enforcement action.
For now, the publicly verified facts are narrower than some early reports suggested: searches have taken place across four cities, multiple Dentsu-linked entities are reportedly covered, and authorities are examining a suspected tax-evasion matter.
The department has not publicly established the alleged tax evasion, its monetary value or the specific transactions at issue.
