At least five people, including children, were killed and several others injured after a powerful explosion ripped through a firecracker manufacturing unit in Manauri village, near the Kaushambi–Prayagraj border in Uttar Pradesh, on Monday, August 31. The blast occurred in the Pipri police station area and was followed by multiple explosions, triggering panic in nearby villages and damaging several surrounding houses.
Police, fire brigade teams and Air Force personnel stationed nearby joined the rescue operation, while the injured were taken to hospitals in Prayagraj for treatment. Kaushambi Circle Officer Shivank Singh said five bodies had been recovered and confirmed that the victims included children. District Magistrate Amit Pal said emergency teams were immediately deployed and that rescue efforts were continuing.
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath expressed condolences to the families of those who died and directed officials to ensure proper treatment for the injured and all possible assistance to the bereaved families. The bodies of the deceased have been sent for post-mortem examination, while authorities continue to assess the extent of the damage and determine what caused the explosion.
Blast Triggers Panic
The explosion took place at a firecracker unit operating in a house amid agricultural fields in the Manauri area. According to initial reports, a series of powerful blasts occurred after a fire broke out inside the premises, sending thick smoke into the sky and prompting residents from surrounding areas to rush towards the site. The explosions reportedly continued for some time, making it difficult for rescue personnel to approach the affected building immediately.
The force of the blast was significant enough to damage nearby structures, with reports stating that around four to six houses close to the unit were affected or collapsed.
Circle Officer Shivank Singh said, “So far, five bodies have been recovered, including those of men and women,” while noting that children were among those who died. He also said that several people had sustained injuries and that the immediate priority was to continue rescue operations. The injured were shifted to hospitals in Prayagraj, with those in serious condition referred to the SRN Hospital for advanced treatment. District Magistrate Amit Pal said four fire brigade vehicles and ambulances were sent to the spot, while police, fire personnel and other emergency teams worked to evacuate people and clear the debris.
Rescue Operations Continue
The incident has raised fresh concerns about the dangers associated with firecracker manufacturing, particularly when such activities take place close to homes and populated areas. The unit was reportedly operating from a house near the Prayagraj–Kaushambi border, rather than an isolated industrial site. Officials have not yet established the precise cause of the blast or publicly confirmed whether the unit had all the required permissions and safety measures in place. A detailed assessment is expected only after rescue and search operations are completed.
The location also meant that several agencies had to work together. Police and fire brigade teams from Kaushambi and Prayagraj were deployed, while Air Force personnel from the nearby Manori Air Force Station also joined the rescue effort. The district administration said the blaze had been brought under control and teams were working to search the premises and remove debris.
Authorities were also assessing whether anyone remained trapped and determining the full extent of structural damage. The sequence of events and the exact circumstances that led to the explosion will need to be established through a proper investigation rather than speculation.
