The six affected workers contracted malaria tropica, caused by the parasite Plasmodium falciparum and considered the most dangerous form of malaria. According to the Frankfurt health authority, five of the infections began in early July, while another case was identified in mid-August. The first death occurred in early July, although the cause was established only after the worker had died. A second employee died in August, bringing the death toll to two.

The other four workers have since been discharged after treatment, according to the health authority. The unusual nature of the outbreak has drawn particular attention because none of the affected employees had recently travelled to a region where malaria is commonly transmitted. The RKI said the most likely explanation was that an infected Anopheles mosquito was brought into Germany on an aircraft and subsequently bit people working at or around the airport. “It is assumed that the infection was transmitted by an infected Anopheles mosquito imported by aircraft,” the institute said in its epidemiological assessment.

Investigation Underway

Following the discovery of the cluster, Frankfurt’s public health department began investigating the source and possible links between the cases. Mosquito traps have been installed across relevant areas of the airport, with captured insects being examined to establish their species and possible origin. Authorities are also carrying out genetic investigations of the malaria parasites found in affected patients, which could help determine whether the infections share a common source.

Fraport has said it has provided comprehensive information to airport employees and encouraged anyone experiencing possible symptoms to seek medical advice. The RKI has warned that airport-associated malaria can be difficult to identify because Germany sees very few cases acquired locally; doctors may therefore not immediately suspect malaria when a patient has not recently travelled abroad. This delay can increase the risk of serious illness.

Malaria is transmitted through bites from infected Anopheles mosquitoes and is not normally spread directly from person to person. Germany last recorded an airport-associated malaria outbreak in 2023, also at Frankfurt Airport.

What Is Malaria?

Malaria is a potentially life-threatening disease caused by Plasmodium parasites. It is primarily spread through the bite of an infected female Anopheles mosquito. When the mosquito bites an infected person, it picks up the parasite and can later transmit it to another person through a subsequent bite. Malaria does not normally spread directly from one person to another, unlike respiratory infections.

The disease can cause fever, chills, headache and weakness, while infections caused by Plasmodium falciparum can become severe and fatal if not diagnosed and treated promptly. WHO says symptoms typically begin around 10–15 days after an infective mosquito bite, although the timing can vary.
