India’s Fertiliser Ministry has deployed a new analytical tool and expanded its digital monitoring system to track fertiliser supplies from the national level down to individual retailers, as the government seeks to identify emerging shortages earlier.
The initiative will use data on production, imports, movement, stocks and retail sales through the Integrated Fertilizer Management System (iFMS), according to the Department of Fertilizers.
The move comes during the Kharif 2026 season, when the government is already using online monitoring to track fertiliser availability across states.

New Dashboard Tracks Fertiliser
The Department of Fertilizers said on August 30 that iFMS has entered a new phase with dashboards and analytical tools that provide officials with a consolidated view of fertiliser production, imports, dispatches, movement, stock availability and retail sales.
The monitoring can be carried out at the national, state, district and retailer levels. The department said the tools are designed to help identify unusual trends and emerging supply situations at an early stage.
The system is developed and technically supported by the National Informatics Centre for the Department of Fertilizers. It connects major stages of the fertiliser supply chain, including production, imports, movement, stocks, retail sales and subsidy processing.
iFMS Covers Millions Of Transactions
The scale of the digital network is substantial. According to the Department of Fertilizers, iFMS covers more than 14 crore Aadhaar-linked fertiliser buyers and over 2.5 lakh retailers.
The platform records around 7 crore metric tonnes of fertiliser sales transactions annually and supports the administration of nearly ₹2 lakh crore in fertiliser subsidy each year.
The department is now using the volume of transaction data for more than simply recording sales. Its analytical tools can examine fertiliser purchases across buyer categories, landholdings, crops, districts and fertiliser types.
This is intended to give officials a clearer picture of consumption patterns and help with more targeted monitoring of the supply chain.

Farmer Data Added To System
The government is also connecting fertiliser transactions with agricultural information held on other government platforms.
The Department of Fertilizers said iFMS has been integrated with Meri Fasal Mera Byora (MFMB) in Haryana, while work has also progressed towards integration with AgriStack.
The department said these integrations have helped establish mechanisms for matching fertiliser buyers with farmer and land records, while also highlighting practical issues around the availability and quality of land and crop data.
A related Framework for Fertilizer Sale (FFS) is being implemented in phases. Under the framework, farmers can book fertiliser through a mobile application using an AgriStack-based farmer ID after verification of land and ownership details. A QR-based booking can then be accessed at the Point of Sale device.
The framework allows the government to compare the quantity indicated during booking with the quantity ultimately purchased.
Government Strengthens Supply Monitoring
The latest digital measures add to an existing system in which the government assesses fertiliser requirements state-wise and month-wise before each cropping season.
According to the Department of Fertilizers, the Department of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare conducts the requirement assessment with state governments. Based on those projections, the Department of Fertilizers allocates supplies through monthly plans and continuously monitors availability using iFMS.
Where domestic production is insufficient to meet requirements, imports are used to bridge the gap. The government said import planning is undertaken in advance, while state governments coordinate with manufacturers and importers to streamline supplies.
The new analytical tools therefore add another layer to the existing monitoring mechanism, giving officials more detailed visibility over where fertiliser is available, how it is moving through the supply chain and how it is being sold at the retail level.
