The National Testing Agency (NTA) has declared the UGC National Eligibility Test (UGC-NET) June 2026 results for 84 subjects, with 6,07,151 candidates having appeared and 1,47,579 qualifying across the three eligibility categories. Of these, 4,241 candidates qualified for Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) and Assistant Professor eligibility, while 45,904 qualified for Assistant Professor and PhD admission and 97,434 for PhD admission alone. The results, announced on August 28, cover 84 of the 87 subjects originally tested.
Candidates who appeared for English, Commerce and Sociology will have to wait for their results after the NTA ordered fresh examinations following an expert committee’s finding of factual, typographical, translation and language-related errors in their question papers. The re-examinations are scheduled for September 9 and 10, and candidates will not have to pay an additional examination fee.
Results Bring Relief
For the 84 subjects included in the current result cycle, 7,73,806 candidates had registered and 6,07,151 ultimately appeared for the examination. The 4,241 candidates qualifying under the JRF and Assistant Professor category will become eligible for the fellowship subject to the applicable rules, while those qualifying under the other categories can pursue the corresponding academic or teaching opportunities. Overall, 1,47,579 candidates around 24.3% of those who appeared qualified in one of the three categories.
A senior NTA official said, according to PTI, that “over 4,000” candidates had qualified for JRF and that more than 97,000 candidates had qualified for PhD admissions. The official added that 6.07 lakh candidates had appeared for the examination across the 84 subjects. The NTA has also released the subject-wise and category-wise cut-offs along with the results.
The UGC-NET is conducted to determine eligibility for Junior Research Fellowship, appointment as an Assistant Professor and admission to PhD programmes in Indian universities and colleges. Candidates are advised to download the result and keep a copy for future academic or recruitment requirements. Those who appeared for the English, Commerce or Sociology papers will have to wait for the fresh examination results following the September 9 and 10 re-tests.
Three Papers Pending
The results come after an unusual disruption to this year’s examination process. The June UGC-NET examination was originally conducted for 87 subjects between June 22 and June 30, with an additional examination conducted on July 5 for affected candidates at one centre.
However, the English, Commerce and Sociology papers were subsequently singled out after an expert committee reviewed complaints and identified factual, typographical, translation and language-related errors in the question papers.
Following the review, the NTA announced that candidates who had appeared for the three affected subjects would have to sit for fresh examinations. The re-tests will be held on September 9 and 10. The agency has clarified that these candidates will not be charged another examination fee, but their results and scorecards will only be made available after the fresh examinations are completed.
The NTA had released the provisional answer key for the 84 unaffected subjects on August 16 and allowed candidates to challenge the questions and responses. The challenges were subsequently examined by subject experts, after which the final answer keys were used to process the results. The agency has advised candidates to rely on its official communications for updates.

Competitive examinations carry enormous weight for students and researchers, often shaping years of academic and professional plans. While the declaration of results for 84 subjects provides much-needed clarity to lakhs of candidates, the errors identified in three question papers also underline why accuracy and quality checks must remain central to high-stakes examinations.
Asking affected candidates to retake a paper they have already prepared for is an added burden, even when a fresh test is necessary to protect fairness for everyone. The decision to waive the additional fee is a welcome step, but clear communication, timely scheduling and transparent handling of concerns can further help rebuild confidence.
