FSSAI Issues Over 150 Notices To Nestle, PepsiCo And More Over Misleading Ads & False Claims

FSSAI tightens enforcement against false wellness claims, serving notices to leading FMCG conglomerates, fast-food chains, and e-commerce platforms.

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has issued more than 150 notices to prominent food and beverage companies, including major conglomerates like Nestle India, PepsiCo, and Coca-Cola India, over deceptive advertisements, unverified claims, and non-compliance with labelling regulations.

The nationwide crackdown also saw 12 notices served to major e-commerce platforms such as Amazon and Flipkart—leading to the cancellation of one Amazon warehouse licence—alongside over 30 notices and five licence suspensions issued to food service chains like Domino’s, McDonald’s, and KFC. While the regulator confirmed that several companies have initiated corrective measures, public health advocates emphasize that notices alone must translate into stricter accountability to protect ordinary shoppers from manipulative marketing.

Cracking Down on False Promises

The regulatory drive targets exaggerated health declarations such as “100% pure,” “natural,” and “healthy” that frequently mask high sugar, sodium, or saturated fat contents.

Besides FMCG giants like Mondelez India, Danone India, Abbott India, and Ferrero India, FSSAI also seized products from manufacturers of energy drinks and alcoholic beverages for failing to meet statutory benchmarks. In its official statement, the food regulator noted, “Over 150 notices issued for misleading advertisements, false claims & labelling non-compliances,” reaffirming that enforcement against non-compliant Food Business Operators (FBOs) has intensified across the supply chain.

Food safety experts advise consumers not to rely solely on front-of-package marketing slogans, urging shoppers to scrutinise the back-of-pack ingredient list, nutritional panel, and statutory certification marks before purchasing.

A Broadening Net

This sweeping enforcement is part of FSSAI‘s expanded oversight across retail, digital storefronts, and hospitality sectors. In previous months, the regulator directed show-cause notices to leading edible oil brands over heart-health claims and penalised luxury five-star establishments for kitchen and compliance lapses.

The current action highlights a growing shift towards digital transparency, ensuring online grocery platforms display mandatory nutritional declarations and expiry details as prominently as brick-and-mortar stores. Although dozens of brands have begun altering packaging and withdrawing contested slogans following the notices, the scale of non-compliance underscores the persistence of deceptive marketing practices in India’s processed food sector.

The Logical Indian’s Perspective

Access to truthful, transparent information about the food we consume is a fundamental consumer right, not a corporate privilege.

When everyday brands use misleading buzzwords to project ultra-processed goods as wellness essentials, they undermine public health and breach the sacred trust between maker and buyer. Corporate responsibility must begin with ethical communication, empathy for the end consumer, and absolute transparency rather than aggressive marketing loopholes. As conscious citizens striving for healthier communities, we must demand stricter compliance and cultivate mindful consumption habits. How often do you read the full ingredient list before buying packaged food, and what measures should authorities take to ensure corporate accountability?
