Two people were killed and five others, including two children, were injured after a large structure carrying the Ganesh idol of ‘Bhuleshwaracha Raja’ toppled during its arrival ceremony in south Mumbai on Saturday night, August 22. The incident occurred at around 10 pm on Balaram Merchant Road near Kabutarkhana at Jay Ambe Chowk in Bhuleshwar, where devotees had gathered for the procession.
The injured were rushed to nearby hospitals, with civic officials later confirming that all five were in stable condition. The deceased were identified as 33-year-old Sanket Nevshe, president of the Ganpati mandal, and Brijesh Hemant Joshi. The Mumbai Fire Brigade, Mumbai Police, traffic police, 108 ambulance services and BMC ward staff were mobilised following the incident. Police have registered an Accidental Death Report (ADR) and are investigating what caused the structure to become unstable.
What Happened
The incident unfolded as the idol, reportedly more than 22 feet tall, was being brought from Lalbaug towards Bhuleshwar for the ceremonial arrival of ‘Bhuleshwaracha Raja’. According to reports, the idol became unbalanced while being transported and fell, striking people accompanying the procession. The impact proved fatal for Nevshe and Joshi, who were subsequently declared dead at hospitals.
The five injured included Vaibhav Ghenand, Pawan Chaurasiya, Kunal Kashid and two minor girls, five-year-old Lavanya Ganer and seven-year-old Divya Ganer. They were taken to GT Hospital, JJ Hospital, HN Reliance Hospital and Saifee Hospital for treatment.
A Mumbai Fire Brigade official suggested that the construction of the frame supporting the idol may have played a role in the accident. “The welding of the frame holding the idol was probably not done properly,” the official said, adding that the idol may have slipped from the centre of the frame.
The official also said the procession was nearing the pandal when the incident occurred and that some of the injured may have been sitting on the trolley carrying the idol. These are preliminary observations, however, and the exact cause remains under investigation. The idol reportedly broke into three pieces after the fall and was later placed on a dumper by members of the mandal.
Safety Amid Celebrations
The tragedy comes as Mumbai prepares for its annual Ganeshotsav celebrations, when large idols are transported through densely populated neighbourhoods and welcomed by crowds of devotees. The ‘Bhuleshwaracha Raja’ mandal is observing its 63rd annual utsav this year, with the idol commissioned from sculptor Aniket Desai.
Arrival ceremonies are an important part of the festival in Mumbai, bringing together communities through music, processions and public celebrations. At the same time, the size and weight of increasingly elaborate idols, combined with crowded streets and the movement of heavy transport structures, make safety arrangements particularly important.
The immediate emergency response involved multiple agencies, including the BMC, Mumbai Fire Brigade, Mumbai Police, traffic police, ambulance personnel and civic ward staff. While the injured have been reported to be stable, the loss of two lives has cast a shadow over what was intended to be a moment of devotion and celebration. The DB Marg police have registered an ADR and are conducting further inquiries into the circumstances that led to the collapse. The investigation will be important in establishing whether inadequate structural support, transportation arrangements or another factor contributed to the accident.
The Logical Indian’s Perspective
Religious celebrations are deeply woven into the social fabric of communities, and public festivities can create powerful moments of togetherness. But celebration should never come at the cost of safety. When large idols and heavy structures are moved through crowded streets, adequate structural checks, trained handlers, secure transportation and proper crowd management must be treated as essential safeguards rather than afterthoughts. The deaths of two people and injuries to five others, including children, are a painful reminder that even cherished traditions require careful planning and responsibility.
As authorities investigate what went wrong in Bhuleshwar, the focus should be on accountability, learning from the incident and preventing similar tragedies during future processions. How can communities and authorities work together to ensure that our festivals remain spaces of faith, joy and togetherness without putting lives at risk?
