Google is giving eligible college students in India a year of its Google AI Plus plan at no cost, a subscription that currently costs ₹399 a month.
That puts the 12-month equivalent at ₹4,788 at the prevailing price. The offer arrives alongside a wider rollout of Gemini-based study tools, including personalised study notebooks, diagnostic quizzes, interactive visualisations and research features.
Back-to-school season is here and starting today, eligible college students can get a full year of Gemini on us:

– US students: 1 year of Google AI Pro at no cost
– 140+ countries: 1 year of Google AI Plus at no cost
Here’s what’s new for students 👇
Google Expands Student Access
Google announced the student programme on August 19, 2026, as part of its global back-to-school push. In markets outside the US where Google AI Plus is available, eligible college students can receive the plan free for one year. India is among those markets.
Students must verify their eligibility, and the page says the offer can be redeemed until December 31, 2026. A valid payment method is required at sign-up, while the subscription is set to charge ₹399 a month after the promotional period unless it is cancelled.
The plan provides 2× higher usage limits for Gemini, 400 GB of cloud storage and access to Gemini Omni. Google also says the student plan includes unlimited uploads for Study Notebooks, Visuals and Live.
What Students Get
The significance of the offer goes beyond a discounted chatbot subscription. Google is positioning Gemini as a study and research workspace.
Study Notebooks can take materials such as syllabi, lecture notes and other course content and turn them into personalised learning resources. Google says students can begin with a learning goal or their course material, take a diagnostic quiz and use the results to identify areas where they need more work. Gemini can then create shorter, interactive lessons around those gaps.
Google is also adding a dedicated Student Hub inside Gemini, bringing together study notebooks, flashcards and practice quizzes. Deep Research is being integrated with Gemini Live, allowing users to discuss research reports conversationally while continuing to use the app.
The company’s education push also extends to Search. Google says students can generate interactive visuals for difficult concepts, take practice quizzes, use Lens for step-by-step learning, organise projects with notebooks and create custom files for study.
India Offer Gets Competitive
Google’s latest student pricing also creates a clear distinction between its entry-level AI Plus offer and the more expensive AI Pro tier.
In India, Business Standard reports that students can access Google AI Pro for ₹489 a month for up to four years. A Google AI Pro and YouTube Premium bundle is listed at ₹550 a month for the same period. The standard AI Pro subscription also includes YouTube Premium Lite, according to Business Standard.
For students who choose AI Plus, the value proposition is straightforward. The regular plan is ₹399 a month, while the promotional offer removes that subscription charge for the first year. Based solely on the current listed monthly price, that is ₹4,788 in subscription value over 12 months.
The offer also comes as Google’s AI products are becoming increasingly integrated across its ecosystem. The current AI Plus plan includes access to Gemini, Deep Research, Gemini Notebook features, AI image, music and video generation, and 400 GB of storage across Google services.
Education Becomes AI Battleground
Google’s latest move shows how quickly generative AI is moving from a general-purpose productivity tool into dedicated education products. Rather than simply providing answers, the company’s newest features are designed around a student’s existing course material, learning goals and practice needs.
That distinction matters because the usefulness of AI in education depends not only on access to powerful models but also on how those models are incorporated into the learning process. Google’s own description focuses on quizzes, study plans, source-based learning and interactive explanations rather than simply generating completed assignments.
For Indian college students, the immediate change is more practical. An AI subscription that normally costs ₹399 a month can now be accessed free for a year by eligible students, while Google’s broader ecosystem is adding tools for studying, research, visual learning and organisation.
The longer-term question will be whether students continue paying once the promotional period ends, but that outcome cannot yet be established from the current offer.
For now, Google is making one thing clear: the next phase of the Gemini race is not only about who can build the most capable AI model, but who can make that AI part of how the next generation learns and works.
The Logical Indian’s Perspective
Google’s free AI Plus offer gives eligible students access to advanced learning and research tools without an upfront subscription cost. The initiative could make sophisticated AI more accessible to young learners, particularly as educational technology becomes increasingly integrated into everyday study.
However, students should treat AI as a learning aid rather than an unquestioned authority. Independent verification, critical thinking and responsible use remain essential, especially when AI-generated information is used for academic work or important decisions.
