The Rajasthan education department on Sunday evening issued an order restricting outsiders from entering government school premises without prior permission from the school principal or head of the institution, hours after the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) announced a statewide campaign to inspect schools it claimed were unsafe or poorly maintained.
The directive also requires prior clearance for photography, videography, interviews, audio recordings and live streaming involving students, teachers or school activities. Government officials performing official duties have been exempted from the permission requirement, while all other visitors must sign the school’s visitor register. The move came as the CJP prepared to expand its “School Thik Karo” campaign across Rajasthan, saying it had received complaints about the condition of government schools in nine districts.
Rajasthan Restricts School Access
According to the education department’s directive, outsiders cannot enter school campuses unless they have prior approval from the principal or head of the institution. The same permission requirement applies to taking photographs or videos, conducting interviews, making audio recordings or live-streaming activities involving students, teachers or school functioning.
Officials visiting schools as part of their official duties have been kept outside the restriction. The order also makes it mandatory for visitors to record their entry in the school visitor register. The directive was issued on Sunday evening, shortly after the CJP announced its plans, although the government order itself does not state that it was issued specifically in response to the organisation’s campaign.

CJP Raises School Safety
The CJP’s “School Thik Karo” campaign is aimed at documenting and highlighting what the organisation describes as poor infrastructure and unsafe conditions in government schools. National spokesperson Ashutosh Ranka said the group had received requests from Jaipur, Ajmer, Jodhpur, Udaipur, Dholpur, Bharatpur, Kota, Barmer and Hanumangarh and that volunteers planned to visit schools across the state over the next two weeks. “Providing good education and health facilities are the basics for any state government. If the government is not able to provide these, then why hold the positions?” Ranka said.
He also claimed that the campaign had already begun with a CJP protest at a government school in Thanagazi, Alwar, on Friday. Ranka referred to the school collapse tragedy in Jhalawar and alleged that the state had not yet presented a concrete plan to address more than 80,000 classrooms that the organisation says are in a dilapidated condition. The CJP has warned that it could launch a larger movement seeking Education Minister Madan Dilawar’s resignation if a plan to address the concerns is not presented in the Rajasthan Assembly.
The Logical Indian’s Perspective
Safe, functional government schools are not merely administrative facilities; they are essential public spaces where children spend a significant part of their lives and where families place their trust. Concerns about unsafe buildings, inadequate infrastructure or poor facilities deserve to be heard and addressed through transparent inspections and timely action.
At the same time, schools are also spaces where children’s privacy, safety and dignity must be protected, making clear rules around visitors, photography and recording important. The challenge, therefore, is to ensure that access regulations do not become a barrier to legitimate public accountability, while inspections and activism remain responsible and respectful of students and staff. Government authorities, school administrators and citizen groups can work together by creating transparent channels through which genuine concerns can be reported, independently verified and resolved.
Ultimately, should the focus now be on finding a transparent middle ground that protects children while ensuring that concerns about government schools can still be independently raised?
