WhatsApp Pay Doubles UPI Transactions To 168 Million, Moves Ahead Of CRED And Amazon Pay

WhatsApp Pay has doubled its UPI transactions in a year, but the numbers reveal just how competitive India’s payments market remains.

WhatsApp Pay processed nearly 168 million UPI transactions in July 2026, more than twice its volume a year earlier, marking a significant shift for a payments service that spent years operating under an onboarding cap.

The Meta-owned platform handled 167.89 million transactions worth ₹12,957.07 crore during the month, making it the eighth-largest UPI app by transaction volume. Yet the numbers also underline how far it remains from India’s three biggest platforms.

WhatsApp Pay Gains Ground

WhatsApp Pay’s July transaction volume was about 125% higher than the 74.6 million transactions recorded in July 2025. Transaction value also increased from ₹5,412.58 crore to ₹12,957.07 crore over the same period.

The increase has moved WhatsApp Pay up three positions in the UPI app rankings. It was the 11th-largest app by transaction volume in July 2025 and reached eighth place in July 2026, moving ahead of CRED and Amazon Pay.

The platform first crossed 100 million UPI transactions in a single month in December 2025. That milestone came one year after a major regulatory change affecting its ability to add users.

Onboarding Cap Was Removed

On December 31, 2024, the National Payments Corporation of India removed the UPI user-onboarding limit for WhatsApp Pay with immediate effect. The decision allowed WhatsApp Pay to extend UPI services to its entire user base in India, while continuing to comply with the rules applicable to third-party UPI apps.

The change ended a phased expansion that had limited WhatsApp Pay’s user onboarding since its UPI launch. NPCI had initially allowed the platform to onboard 20 million users in 2020. The ceiling was increased to 40 million in 2021 and then to 100 million in 2022 before the restriction was removed in December 2024.

The timing is relevant when assessing WhatsApp Pay’s recent numbers. Its transaction volumes have risen substantially since the onboarding restriction was removed, but the available data does not establish that the regulatory change alone caused the increase.

UPI Market Remains Concentrated

WhatsApp Pay’s growth is taking place in a UPI market that has reached a far larger scale. India’s payment network processed 23.66 billion transactions worth ₹29.88 lakh crore in July 2026. The month marked a new high for UPI transaction activity.

The government said in July that 55.49 crore users had been onboarded on UPI as of June 2026. During FY2025-26, UPI processed 24,161.69 crore transactions worth ₹314.23 lakh crore.

Against that backdrop, WhatsApp Pay’s 167.89 million July transactions represented less than 1% of the month’s total UPI transaction volume. Its rise is therefore significant for the competitive landscape, but it does not yet materially challenge the largest platforms.

PhonePe Google Pay Lead

PhonePe, Google Pay and Paytm remained well ahead of WhatsApp Pay in July. They processed 10.85 billion, 7.64 billion and 1.90 billion UPI transactions, respectively, according to the data cited by Business Standard.

The difference in scale is substantial. PhonePe’s July transaction volume was more than 64 times that of WhatsApp Pay, while Google Pay’s was more than 45 times higher.

The concentration at the top is also a continuing feature of India’s UPI market. Reuters reported in July that PhonePe and Google Pay together accounted for roughly four-fifths of UPI transactions, while the implementation deadline for the proposed 30% market-share cap for individual UPI apps has been extended to December 2026.

For WhatsApp Pay, the immediate story is therefore not a challenge to PhonePe or Google Pay. It is the speed at which the platform is expanding after its onboarding restrictions were removed. Whether that momentum continues will become clearer through subsequent NPCI monthly data.

The Logical Indian’s Perspective

WhatsApp Pay’s growth shows how India’s digital payments landscape continues to evolve as more platforms compete for everyday transactions. Its July numbers are impressive, particularly after years of onboarding restrictions were removed.

At the same time, the gap with PhonePe, Google Pay and Paytm remains substantial. The development is best viewed as increasing competition within UPI, rather than a disruption of its existing leaders. For users, greater choice can encourage better payment experiences, accessibility and innovation across the ecosystem.
