Recent data presented in the Rajya Sabha by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) reveals a nearly sevenfold surge in attacks on Indians abroad over the last five years (2021–2025).
The United States recorded the highest number of such incidents, followed closely by the United Arab Emirates, the United Kingdom, and Canada. Minister of State for External Affairs Kirti Vardhan Singh assured Parliament that safeguarding Indian nationals remains the government’s top priority, with diplomatic missions actively pursuing justice with host nations.
While officials emphasise swift diplomatic interventions, the sharp increase has raised widespread concerns among diaspora communities regarding their safety and the efficacy of international protection measures.
Alarming Surge in Global Incidents
Between 2021 and 2025, a total of 302 attacks on Indian nationals were reported across 36 countries, escalating drastically from just 15 incidents in 2021 to 104 in 2025.
The United States topped the list with 33 recorded attacks, peaking at 14 cases in 2025 alone. The UAE followed with 32 incidents, whilst the UK and Canada reported 31 and 30 cases respectively. Highlighting the government’s proactive measures, Kirti Vardhan Singh stated, “Indian Missions and Posts remain vigilant and closely monitor any untoward incidents affecting Indian nationals abroad.
Such incidents are immediately taken up with the authorities concerned of the host country to ensure that the cases are properly investigated and the perpetrators are punished as per their domestic laws”.
A Broader Pattern of Vulnerability
The sobering statistics emerge against a backdrop of heightened global debates surrounding immigration, economic anxiety, and xenophobia.
Beyond the traditional strongholds of the Indian diaspora in North America and Britain, countries like Ireland have also reported a spate of racist attacks against Indians recently, accounting for 24 cases during this period. Historically, the Indian diaspora has been a cornerstone of global migration, contributing significantly to the cultural and economic landscapes of their host nations. However, this recent uptick in violence underscores a growing global vulnerability.
To combat this, the Indian government has encouraged overseas citizens to utilise grievance redressal portals like MADAD and maintains local panels of lawyers to provide emergency legal and consular assistance when required.
