Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday launched the ‘Nasha Mukt Yuva for Viksit Bharat Sankalp Abhiyan’ through video conferencing, describing it as a nationwide movement to build a healthier, stronger and drug-free younger generation that can contribute to the vision of Viksit Bharat 2047.
Calling upon citizens to dedicate the next 100 Sundays to anti-drug awareness and community action, the Prime Minister urged young people to prioritise physical and mental fitness, education, sports and skill development over substance abuse.
He also warned that drug trafficking is not merely a law-and-order issue but forms part of a broader strategy by hostile forces to weaken the country. The campaign, led by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports through MY Bharat (Mera Yuva Bharat), seeks to involve schools, colleges, youth organisations and communities in awareness drives, competitions and public outreach.
Government officials said that more than one crore young people have already participated in the Nasha Mukti pledge, reflecting the Centre’s effort to transform the initiative into a nationwide people’s movement.
A National Call Against Drugs
Launching the campaign, Prime Minister Modi said that India’s aspiration of becoming a developed nation by 2047 cannot be realised without a healthy, disciplined and confident younger generation. Stressing that the initiative extends beyond individuals and families, he described it as a mission for the nation’s future and appealed for widespread public participation.
“The next 100 Sundays will mark 100 strong steps towards a drug-free India,” the Prime Minister said, urging citizens to convert the campaign into a mass movement. He encouraged young Indians to remain physically active, focus on mental well-being, pursue education and skill development, and channel their energy into sports and nation-building instead of narcotics.
During his address, PM Modi highlighted the devastating impact of drug addiction on individuals and families. He said substance abuse often destroys educational opportunities, careers and relationships while leaving long-lasting emotional and financial consequences for households. Calling for a collective response, he urged parents, teachers, educational institutions and communities to identify early signs of addiction, spread awareness and support rehabilitation efforts.
The Prime Minister also linked drug trafficking to national security concerns, stating that narcotics networks should not be viewed solely through the lens of crime. “Hurting India’s interests by supplying drugs is part of enemy nations’ terror plan,” he said, urging citizens to remain vigilant and support enforcement agencies working to dismantle illegal drug networks.
Campaign Builds on Existing Efforts
The newly launched Sankalp Abhiyan builds upon the ongoing ‘Nasha Mukt Yuva for Viksit Bharat’ initiative being implemented by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports through MY Bharat. According to the government, the campaign aims to encourage sustained public participation over the coming months by engaging schools, colleges, youth clubs, civil society organisations and local communities.
As part of the initiative, district, state and national-level competitions, campus awareness programmes, street plays, debates, painting and slogan-writing contests, music and dance events, reel-making competitions, short-film contests and national anti-drug quizzes are being organised to encourage young people to become ambassadors of a drug-free India. Officials said these programmes primarily target youth between the ages of 15 and 29 years, combining awareness with community participation and civic engagement.
The government also announced that more than one crore young people have already taken the Nasha Mukti pledge, signalling strong initial participation in the campaign. Officials believe the initiative complements the broader Nasha Mukt Bharat mission by combining public health awareness with community-led action, while reinforcing the government’s long-term vision of Viksit Bharat@2047. By encouraging regular awareness activities over the next 100 Sundays, the Centre hopes to transform anti-drug messaging into a sustained social movement rather than a one-time campaign.
The Logical Indian’s Perspective
Drug addiction is a complex public health challenge that affects individuals, families and communities across social and economic backgrounds. Awareness campaigns, youth engagement and conversations around mental health can play an important role in prevention, but lasting progress also depends on accessible rehabilitation services, evidence-based treatment, family support systems, quality education and livelihood opportunities. Equally important is coordinated action against organised drug trafficking while ensuring that people struggling with addiction are treated with empathy and dignity rather than stigma.
