A wedding journey turned tragic on Sunday night when a Scorpio carrying guests from Delhi crossed the central divider and collided head-on with an Ertiga on the Delhi-Lucknow Highway (NH-9) in Uttar Pradesh’s Hapur district, killing three people and seriously injuring seven others.
According to Garh police, the Scorpio was travelling from Mustafabad in northeast Delhi to Bijnor for a wedding procession when its driver allegedly lost control while attempting to avoid an animal that had wandered onto the highway.
The SUV reportedly struck the animal, crossed into the opposite carriageway and crashed into an Ertiga coming from Sambhal. Police identified the deceased as Sarfaraz (45), Afzal (37) and Abrar (48), all residents of Delhi. Seven injured passengers were rushed to hospitals, with two referred to Meerut for advanced treatment and five admitted in Hapur.
Garh Station House Officer (SHO) Devendra Singh Bisht said the exact circumstances of the accident are being investigated and authorities are examining all possible factors, including speed, visibility, road conditions and mechanical issues, before reaching a final conclusion.
Wedding Trip Ends Tragically
The collision occurred in the Garhmukteshwar area of Hapur district, a busy stretch of the Delhi-Lucknow Highway that witnesses heavy passenger and commercial traffic throughout the day and night.
Police said the Scorpio was carrying a group of young men from Delhi who were on their way to attend a wedding in Bijnor. Preliminary findings suggest an animal suddenly appeared on the highway, prompting the driver to take evasive action.
In the process, the vehicle reportedly lost balance, struck the animal, crossed the central divider and entered the opposite lane before colliding head-on with an Ertiga approaching from Sambhal.
The impact of the crash was severe, leaving both vehicles extensively damaged. Local residents were among the first to respond and joined police personnel from Garh police station in rescuing occupants trapped inside the mangled vehicles before ambulances shifted the injured to nearby hospitals.
The bodies of the three deceased have been sent for post-mortem examination, while doctors continue to treat the injured. Officials have not yet disclosed the identities or medical condition of all those injured.
Garh SHO Devendra Singh Bisht said investigators are documenting evidence from the accident site, examining both vehicles and recording statements from survivors and eyewitnesses to establish the precise sequence of events. Police have urged people not to speculate until the investigation is completed.

Beyond the immediate tragedy, the accident has once again drawn attention to the recurring problem of stray animals entering national highways across northern India. Such incidents frequently force motorists to brake suddenly or make sharp manoeuvres, significantly increasing the risk of losing control at highway speeds.
While the police’s preliminary assessment suggests the driver attempted to avoid an animal, authorities have clarified that they are also examining whether excessive speed, reduced visibility, driver reaction time or any mechanical failure contributed to the crash.
The Delhi-Lucknow Highway, officially part of NH-9, remains one of northern India’s busiest transport corridors, connecting Delhi with several major cities in Uttar Pradesh. Hapur district has witnessed multiple serious road accidents in recent months, prompting renewed conversations around road safety infrastructure, better fencing to prevent animals from entering highways, improved surveillance systems and quicker emergency response mechanisms.
Road safety experts have consistently emphasised that preventing animals from accessing high-speed roads, maintaining lane discipline and encouraging defensive driving are all essential to reducing fatalities.
