Gujarat’s rain-related death toll has climbed to 35 over the past two days after authorities recovered bodies as floodwaters receded and rescue operations concluded, officials said on Saturday (July 25, 2026). The fatalities were reported after days of exceptionally heavy monsoon rainfall that inundated several districts, particularly Valsad and Navsari.
Relief Commissioner Gaurang Makwana said many of those who had gone missing during the flooding were accounted for as waters subsided. While rainfall has eased across much of the state, the government has shifted its focus from rescue to rehabilitation, damage assessment and disease prevention, even as authorities remain on alert for fresh spells of heavy rain in parts of north Gujarat.
Over 7,000 Rescued
Relief Commissioner Gaurang Makwana said a total of 35 rain-related deaths had been recorded in the past two days. “A total of 35 rain-related deaths have been reported so far in the state in the last two days as bodies washed away in floodwaters were recovered and missing persons were accounted for after the rain stopped and rescue operations concluded,” he said.
Officials added that 29 of the deaths occurred in Valsad and Navsari, the two districts worst affected by flooding. Most fatalities were caused by drowning or people being swept away by strong currents. More than 7,000 people were rescued, while nearly 42,000 residents were shifted to safer locations during the relief operations.
Rescue efforts involved 18 National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams, 32 State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) teams, along with personnel from the Indian Army, Indian Coast Guard and local volunteers. Navsari Collector Manish Gurwani said around 14,000 people were relocated from the district, with over 1,200 rescue operations carried out. The Coast Guard also airlifted around 60 shrimp farmers stranded near Mendhar-Gandevi.
Damage Assessment
With floodwaters gradually receding, the Gujarat government has begun surveying damage to crops, homes and public infrastructure while launching large-scale sanitation drives to prevent outbreaks of water-borne diseases. Authorities are spraying pesticides in flood-affected areas and restoring essential services.
Valsad Collector Nitin Sangwan said rescue operations in the district had concluded and that cash assistance would begin from Monday, either through direct bank transfers or cash payments for eligible beneficiaries without bank accounts. The assistance will help cover losses related to household belongings, wages lost for up to three days and livestock deaths.
Meanwhile, Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel reviewed the state’s preparedness and relief measures at the State Emergency Operations Centre (SEOC) in Gandhinagar. He directed district collectors to remain on high alert in view of forecasts of further heavy rainfall in parts of north Gujarat, expedite sanitation and damage assessment work, and ensure that relief reaches affected families without delay. The state government also confirmed that the distribution of cash doles and household assistance has commenced in severely affected districts.

Timely compensation, public health safeguards and resilient infrastructure must remain priorities as extreme weather events become increasingly frequent.
