Senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Pralhad Joshi has been appointed as India’s new Union Education Minister after President Droupadi Murmu accepted the resignation of Dharmendra Pradhan on the advice of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Joshi has been entrusted with the additional charge of the Ministry of Education while continuing to head the Ministries of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution, and New and Renewable Energy.

A Veteran Politician
Born on November 27, 1962, in Vijayapura (formerly Bijapur), Karnataka, Pralhad Venkatesh Joshi completed his schooling in Hubballi before pursuing a Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree from K.S. Arts College, affiliated with Karnataka University, Dharwad. Before entering full-time politics, he was involved in business and grassroots social work. His political journey began through the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and later the BJP’s organisational network, where he steadily rose through the ranks.
Joshi served as president of the BJP’s Dharwad district unit from 1995 to 1998 and later became the party’s Karnataka general secretary between 2006 and 2013. He subsequently took over as the BJP’s Karnataka state president, strengthening the party’s organisational presence across the state.
Joshi first entered Parliament in 2004 after winning the Dharwad Lok Sabha seat. Since then, he has successfully retained the constituency in every general election, making him one of Karnataka’s longest-serving BJP Members of Parliament. Over the years, he has served on several important parliamentary committees covering sectors such as Railways, Petroleum and Natural Gas, Chemicals and Fertilisers, Transport, Tourism and Culture.
In Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s governments, Joshi has held several key Cabinet portfolios, including Parliamentary Affairs, Coal and Mines, before assuming charge of the Ministries of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution, and New and Renewable Energy in 2024. With his latest appointment, he now adds the Education Ministry to his responsibilities, making him one of the senior-most ministers in the Union Cabinet.
A Challenging Portfolio at a Crucial Time
Pralhad Joshi assumes charge of the Ministry of Education at a pivotal moment for India’s education system.
