India Scripts History At 58th IChO 2026, Wins Four Gold Medals To Finish Joint World No. 1

India has achieved its finest-ever performance at the 58th International Chemistry Olympiad (IChO) 2026, with all four members of its national team winning gold medals and the country finishing joint first in the overall medal tally. Held in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, from July 10 to 19, the prestigious global competition brought together 363 students from 93 countries, making it the largest edition in the Olympiad’s history.

The historic feat marks the first time India has secured a clean sweep of gold medals at the International Chemistry Olympiad. Sharing the top position with China, Vietnam and the Individual Participants Group B (Russia), India’s achievement reflects not only the brilliance of its young students but also the strength of the country’s long-standing science education and mentorship ecosystem.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated the team, saying their accomplishment would inspire countless young minds to pursue science and showcase India’s growing presence in global academic competitions.

India Tops IChO 2026

The four Indian students who brought home gold medals are Debadatta Priyadarshi from Bhubaneswar, Odisha; Harshit Singhal from Mandi Gobindgarh, Punjab; Kabeer Chhillar from Delhi; and Sandeep Kuchi from Hyderabad, Telangana.

Congratulating the students, Prime Minister Narendra Modi wrote on X, “India’s Yuva Shakti continues to make a mark globally! Congratulations to our team of Debadatta Priyadarshi, Harshit Singhal, Kabeer Chhillar and Sandeep Kuchi for winning Gold Medals at the 58th International Chemistry Olympiad. This was India’s best performance at this prestigious platform.”

He further added, “Their brilliance, dedication and passion for science have made the entire nation proud. It will also motivate countless young minds to study and excel in chemistry.”

The achievement comes at a time when India has been steadily strengthening its position in international science competitions, highlighting the growing capabilities of its young scientific talent.

IChO 2026 Competition Highlights

The International Chemistry Olympiad (IChO) is regarded as one of the world’s most challenging competitions for high school students with exceptional aptitude in chemistry. Participants are tested through rigorous theoretical and laboratory-based examinations that assess analytical thinking, scientific reasoning and practical skills.

This year’s theoretical examination featured nine advanced problems covering subjects such as reaction kinetics, carbon dioxide reduction, nitrogen fixation, porous framework materials, cyclocarbons, stereochemistry and molecular analysis.

The practical examination required students to perform sophisticated laboratory experiments, including the synthesis and analysis of metal complexes, enzyme-based identification of biochemical mixtures and pH-metric titrations to determine acid compositions.

The complexity of these assessments ensures that only students with deep conceptual understanding and exceptional laboratory skills excel at the international level.

HBCSE Training Behind Success

India’s outstanding performance was built on months of intensive preparation led by the Chemistry Olympiad Cell of the Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education (HBCSE) under the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR).

The Indian delegation was headed by Prof. Subhajit Bandyopadhyay of IISER Kolkata, while Dr. Indrani Das Sen of HBCSE served as mentor. Supporting the delegation as Scientific Observers were Dr. Anubendu Adhikary of IIT Kharagpur and Dr. Jayasree Gopalakrishnan of NES Ratnam College of Arts, Science and Commerce, Mumbai.

Before representing the country, the students underwent a rigorous national selection process followed by specialised orientation camps and intensive pre-departure training. The Department of Atomic Energy (DAE) credited HBCSE’s extensive network of teachers, mentors and academic experts for preparing the students to compete against the world’s best.

The programme also receives continued support from the National Steering Committee on Science Olympiads, the Department of Science and Technology (DST), the Ministry of Education and other scientific institutions that work together to identify and nurture talented students across India.

India’s success at IChO 2026 also builds on a remarkable long-term record. Since making its debut 27 years ago, Indian participants have won gold medals in nearly 32 per cent of appearances, silver medals in 51 per cent and bronze medals in 17 per cent. Over the last ten editions, the country’s performance has improved significantly, with 43 per cent of its medals being gold and 53 per cent silver.

India’s Science Olympiad Rise

While the four gold medals have captured national attention, the achievement represents something much larger than a successful international competition. It reflects the steady evolution of India’s science education ecosystem, where talented students receive structured mentorship, access to advanced training and opportunities to compete globally.

International Olympiads often serve as launching pads for future scientists, researchers and innovators. Many former Olympiad participants have gone on to contribute to cutting-edge research, academia and technology across the world. India’s consistent improvement at global Olympiads demonstrates that investments in scientific education, teacher development and institutional collaboration are yielding long-term results.

Equally significant is the geographical diversity of this year’s winners. Coming from Odisha, Punjab, Delhi and Telangana, the four students represent different regions of the country, underscoring that scientific excellence is emerging from across India rather than a handful of metropolitan centres.

Much of the coverage surrounding India’s historic IChO 2026 performance has rightly celebrated the four gold medals and the country’s joint first-place finish. However, the larger story lies in the ecosystem that made this achievement possible.
