Climate activist and education reform advocate Sonam Wangchuk was admitted to Delhi’s Safdarjung Hospital on Saturday morning after his health condition deteriorated during his 21-day indefinite hunger strike at Jantar Mantar.
The hospital said Wangchuk was brought in at 7:40 AM for emergency treatment and had become weak due to prolonged fasting and dehydration. Doctors said his condition was stable but he required continuous monitoring and treatment to restore his body parameters.
Delhi Police shifted him from the protest site following medical advice and directions issued by the Delhi High Court regarding regular health checks and necessary intervention if required.
While authorities said the move was made to ensure medical care, Wangchuk’s supporters and organisers questioned the manner in which he was removed from the protest site. His supporters have continued raising concerns over the issues that led to his fast, while medical teams are now monitoring his recovery at Safdarjung Hospital.
Health Declined After Fast

The hospital stated, “Due to prolonged fasting and dehydration, he has become weak. Although his condition is currently stable, he requires continuous monitoring and treatment to restore his body parameters to normal.”
Doctors said the immediate priority was to stabilise his health and address the impact of extended fasting. Medical experts generally caution that prolonged fasting can lead to dehydration, weakness, electrolyte imbalance and complications affecting vital body functions, making close monitoring essential.
Before being shifted to the hospital, Wangchuk had continued his protest despite concerns raised over his deteriorating health. His supporters had expressed worry about the physical impact of continuing the fast, while Wangchuk maintained that his protest was a peaceful way to draw attention towards the concerns he had been highlighting.
The development came after growing medical concerns around his condition and a Delhi High Court hearing on the matter. The court had directed authorities to ensure regular medical monitoring of Wangchuk and said that necessary action should be taken if doctors believed intervention was required.
