A 25-year-old woman, identified as Kamla, died at Bikaner’s Pandit B D Sharma (PBM) Hospital on Tuesday after spending 36 days in the intensive care unit (ICU) following complications from a caesarean delivery.

Her death is the third reported maternal death at the hospital in recent weeks involving similar post-surgery complications, taking the number of such deaths reported from government hospitals across Rajasthan to 19 since May.

Kamla had delivered her third child through a caesarean procedure on June 8 and initially appeared stable, but developed severe complications within a day, including complete stoppage of urine output.

Doctors shifted her to the ICU, provided ventilator support and dialysis, and later consulted specialists from AIIMS Jodhpur, but she could not be saved.

Hospital authorities said investigations are ongoing, while the deaths have raised concerns about post-caesarean monitoring, emergency care and maternal healthcare systems in the state.

36-Day ICU Battle Ends In Death

Kamla was admitted to PBM Hospital on June 8, where she delivered her third child through a caesarean section. According to a senior hospital official quoted by The Times of India, the procedure was considered necessary as she had undergone two previous caesarean deliveries.

“Since she had undergone two previous caesarean deliveries, it was necessary to deliver her third baby through the same procedure,” the official said.

Initially, both Kamla and her newborn were reported to be stable. However, within 24 hours of the surgery, her health began deteriorating. Doctors found that she had developed multiple complications, with complete stoppage of urine output emerging as one of the most serious concerns.

She was subsequently moved to the ICU and placed on ventilator support. Medical teams began dialysis after her kidneys showed signs of failure. Her condition showed temporary improvement after treatment, and she was taken off ventilator support once urine output resumed.

However, her recovery remained uncertain. Doctors later performed another surgery after complications developed around the caesarean stitches. Following this, her condition worsened rapidly, with multiple organs getting affected.

According to hospital officials, doctors from AIIMS Jodhpur were also consulted as her condition became critical, but despite medical efforts, Kamla could not be saved. She leaves behind her newborn child and a family now seeking answers over what went wrong after what was expected to be a routine childbirth procedure.

Pattern Of Similar Deaths Raises Concerns

Kamla’s death is the third maternal death reported from PBM Hospital in recent weeks involving similar post-delivery complications.

On June 19, 20-year-old Preeti died after developing complications following childbirth. Two days later, 26-year-old Sharda also died after suffering kidney failure and requiring multiple dialysis sessions.

A common pattern has emerged in all three reported cases at PBM Hospital the women experienced a complete stoppage of urine output within 24 hours of undergoing caesarean surgery.

Medical experts note that reduced or absent urine production after surgery can be an early warning sign of serious complications, including kidney injury, severe infection, excessive blood loss or other post-operative conditions. Such situations require immediate medical assessment and intervention.

The cases have attracted attention as six women who underwent caesarean deliveries at PBM Hospital in June reportedly developed serious medical complications. Authorities are examining the circumstances surrounding these cases to determine whether there were any common factors behind the outcomes.

However, the exact causes behind the deaths will only become clear after detailed medical investigations and reviews of individual patient records.

19 Maternal Deaths Reported Across Rajasthan

The deaths at PBM Hospital come amid reports of multiple maternal deaths from government hospitals across Rajasthan. According to reports, 19 such deaths have been recorded since May. The cases have been reported from several districts, including Kota, Bikaner, Jodhpur, Bhilwara and Banswara.

Five deaths were reported from Kota, three from Bikaner, two from Jodhpur, four from Bhilwara and five from Banswara. The rising number of maternal deaths has brought renewed focus on the quality of post-operative care available in government hospitals, especially after caesarean deliveries.

Healthcare professionals have repeatedly highlighted that the period immediately after childbirth is critical. Complications such as infections, organ dysfunction, internal bleeding or adverse reactions can worsen quickly if not identified and treated at the earliest stage.

For families, these medical emergencies often turn moments of celebration into prolonged battles for survival. In Kamla’s case, the birth of her third child was followed by more than a month of intensive medical care before her death.

The Rajasthan health authorities and hospital administration are expected to examine the cases to understand whether gaps in monitoring, diagnosis or treatment contributed to the outcomes.

The Logical Indian’s Perspective

Maternal healthcare is not just a medical responsibility but a measure of how a society protects its most vulnerable members. Every woman entering a hospital for childbirth deserves access to safe procedures, timely diagnosis and quality post-operative care, regardless of whether she delivers in a private facility or a government hospital.

The deaths reported from Rajasthan’s government hospitals underline the importance of strengthening healthcare systems, improving emergency response mechanisms and ensuring transparent investigations whenever preventable tragedies are suspected.
