Thailand will continue to allow Indian passport holders to enter the country visa-free, but the maximum permitted stay has been reduced from 60 to 30 days.
The Thai cabinet approved this measure on Tuesday to accommodate the travel patterns of Indian tourists while actively supporting its vital tourism industry. This decision follows a period of uncertainty caused by a previous proposal to revoke visa-free entry entirely, which had led to a noticeable decline in Indian arrivals. While tourists benefit from the continued exemption, the Thai government is simultaneously tightening its oversight to prevent the misuse of tourist visas for illegal activities.
Balancing Tourism and Security
India currently stands as Thailand‘s third-largest source of tourists, trailing only behind China and Malaysia, making it a critical demographic for the nation’s economy.
Thailand’s Tourism Minister, Surasak Phancharoenworakul, explained the rationale behind the cabinet’s decision, noting that a 30-day window aligns perfectly with the typical holiday behaviour of Indian travellers. “If problems arise from this measure in the future, the government can review it then,” Surasak stated to reporters following the cabinet meeting. The updated policy, which also extends 30-day visa-free entry to several other nations, attempts to welcome genuine holidaymakers while addressing domestic concerns about foreign nationals exploiting long-term stays for unauthorised work.

The recent clarification comes on the heels of significant confusion earlier this year. In May, the Thai cabinet had initially approved a controversial proposal to reduce the list of visa-exempt nations from 93 to 54, which would have entirely removed India from the visa-free roster.
Although that rule was never officially implemented, the mere announcement created widespread anxiety among travellers and led to a sharp drop in bookings from India. Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul’s administration is currently navigating the delicate balance of sustaining its lucrative $50 billion tourism sector while initiating a broader crackdown on transnational scams and illegal foreign businesses operating in local tourist hotspots.
