Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Saturday accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of attempting to destabilise his National Conference (NC)-led government by engineering defections. Addressing a party workers’ convention in Srinagar, Abdullah alleged that some NC MLAs had been offered between Rs 20 crore and Rs 30 crore, ministerial berths and even the promise of restoring Jammu and Kashmir’s statehood in exchange for switching allegiance.
He claimed one of his party legislators from the Jammu region informed him about the alleged offer and reiterated that his government remained united. The BJP strongly denied the allegations, calling them “baseless” and demanding that Abdullah either provide evidence to support his claims or issue a public apology. The exchange has intensified political tensions in the Union Territory, where the restoration of statehood continues to remain a key political issue.
Omar Abdullah Alleges Attempts To Engineer Defections
Speaking before National Conference workers, Omar Abdullah alleged that efforts were being made to bring down his government through inducements rather than democratic means. According to the chief minister, an NC MLA from Jammu recently informed him that he had been approached with an offer of Rs 20 crore to Rs 30 crore, a ministerial position and assurances that Jammu and Kashmir’s statehood would be restored if he joined the BJP.
Without naming the legislator or producing documentary evidence, Abdullah said such attempts reflected a strategy to weaken the elected government from within. “There is not a single MLA who will sell his integrity,” he said, asserting that the National Conference legislators remained committed to the mandate given to them by the people. He further alleged that the BJP had failed to secure power through elections and was therefore attempting to form a government “through the backdoor” by encouraging defections.
Abdullah also criticised what he described as repeated attempts to influence elected representatives through political incentives. He maintained that the people of Jammu and Kashmir had voted for stability and democratic governance, and that any effort to undermine that mandate would be resisted.
BJP Rejects Allegations, Demands Proof
The Bharatiya Janata Party swiftly rejected the chief minister’s allegations, describing them as politically motivated and without factual basis. BJP national spokesperson Sudhanshu Trivedi termed Abdullah’s remarks “highly irresponsible and baseless”, saying that such serious accusations should be backed by credible evidence rather than public statements. He urged the chief minister to either substantiate his claims or apologise to the people.
Jammu and Kashmir BJP spokesperson R S Pathania echoed the party’s position and warned that legal action could be considered if the allegations continued without proof. According to BJP leaders, the accusations were intended to divert attention from governance challenges rather than reflect political reality.
The latest exchange comes amid an ongoing political debate over the restoration of Jammu and Kashmir’s statehood. Since assuming office, Omar Abdullah has consistently maintained that the restoration of full statehood remains one of his government’s top priorities. The Centre, meanwhile, has repeatedly stated that statehood will be restored at an appropriate time after the completion of the necessary administrative and security processes.
Political observers note that allegations of attempts to engineer defections have surfaced in several states over the past decade, often leading to legal disputes and public debate about the stability of elected governments. However, in the present case, no independent evidence supporting Abdullah’s allegations has been made public, and the BJP has categorically denied any involvement.
