Kerala: Landslide Strikes Wayanad Tunnel Project Site, 3 Rescued; NDRF Leads Rescue Operation

Rescue teams continue searching after a landslide struck Kerala's Wayanad tunnel construction site, trapping workers.

A landslide struck the Anakkompoyil-Meppadi tunnel project site near Kalladi in Kerala’s Wayanad district on Tuesday, triggering fears that several workers may be trapped beneath mud and debris.

The incident occurred near Meenakshi Bridge, where construction is underway on the tunnel project aimed at improving connectivity between Malappuram and Wayanad districts. Personnel from the Kerala Fire and Rescue Services, Kerala Police and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) launched an intensive search and rescue operation immediately after the collapse.

Local residents rescued three people before emergency teams arrived, while authorities continue to verify whether more workers remain trapped. Kerala Minister T Siddique and the Wayanad District Collector are personally overseeing the rescue efforts and coordinating with multiple agencies.

The incident has also revived painful memories of the devastating July 2024 Wayanad landslides, which claimed more than 400 lives and highlighted the vulnerability of Kerala’s ecologically sensitive hill districts to extreme weather and slope failures.

Rescue Teams Race Against Time

Rescue operations continued through the day as emergency personnel worked cautiously to clear debris from the landslide-hit construction site. According to officials, the landslide occurred at the workers’ camp near the tunnel excavation site, where labourers associated with the Anakkompoyil-Meppadi tunnel project were staying.

Fire and Rescue Services personnel from Kalpetta were among the first responders, later joined by the Kerala Police and specialised NDRF teams. Authorities deployed heavy earth-moving equipment alongside manual search operations to avoid causing further instability in the already fragile terrain.

Officials confirmed that local residents played a crucial role in the immediate aftermath by rescuing three people before rescue teams reached the spot. The affected area also includes a handful of houses and homestays, prompting authorities to assess whether any local residents may have been affected.

Kerala Minister T Siddique and the Wayanad District Collector are supervising the rescue operation and reviewing the situation on the ground.

Officials have said they are verifying the exact number of workers present at the site at the time of the landslide and will continue search operations until everyone is accounted for. They have also appealed to the public to rely only on official updates while rescue efforts remain underway.

Project Amid Fragile Terrain

The Anakkompoyil-Meppadi tunnel project is one of Kerala’s significant infrastructure initiatives, designed to provide an all-weather road connection between Malappuram and Wayanad while reducing travel time and improving connectivity for residents, businesses and tourists.

Construction began last year after years of planning and has been viewed as an important project for the region’s economic and social development.

However, the latest incident has once again highlighted the engineering and environmental challenges of executing large-scale infrastructure projects in the geologically sensitive Western Ghats. Wayanad’s hilly landscape is particularly vulnerable during the southwest monsoon, when prolonged rainfall can saturate slopes and trigger landslides.

Tuesday’s incident comes nearly two years after the catastrophic July 2024 landslides that devastated Chooralmala, Mundakkai and surrounding parts of Meppadi. Triggered by torrential rain, the disaster killed more than 400 people, left many missing and destroyed homes, roads and livelihoods, making it one of Kerala’s deadliest natural disasters.

Since then, experts have repeatedly stressed the importance of comprehensive geological assessments, continuous slope monitoring, improved drainage systems and climate-resilient infrastructure planning.

While authorities have strengthened disaster preparedness and forecasting mechanisms, changing rainfall patterns and increasing climate-related risks continue to pose serious challenges for development in ecologically fragile regions like Wayanad.

The Logical Indian’s Perspective

The landslide at the Anakkompoyil-Meppadi tunnel project is a sobering reminder that development and environmental stewardship must go hand in hand. Better roads and improved connectivity can transform lives, strengthen local economies and improve access to healthcare, education and emergency services. Yet these benefits should never come at the cost of worker safety or the ecological balance of vulnerable landscapes.

Scientific planning, transparent environmental assessments, strict adherence to safety protocols and continuous monitoring of high-risk construction sites are essential, particularly in regions with a history of devastating landslides. As rescue teams work tirelessly to locate anyone who may still be trapped, the immediate priority remains saving lives and supporting affected families with compassion and timely information.
