At least seven passengers were killed and more than 15 others injured after a private bus travelling from Haridwar to Indore collided with a trailer and plunged into a roadside gorge on the Delhi–Mumbai Expressway in Rajasthan’s Dausa district in the early hours of Wednesday.
The accident occurred between 2 am and 3 am near a rest area under Kolwa police station limits, according to police and PTI. A fire broke out in the rear of the bus shortly after the crash, triggering panic among passengers, many of whom were asleep.
Emergency responders, police personnel and local residents carried out rescue operations, shifting the injured to Dausa District Hospital, while critically injured passengers were referred to higher medical centres.
Police have seized both vehicles and launched an investigation into the cause of the accident. Senior district officials visited the hospital to review treatment arrangements and directed medical staff to ensure timely care for all victims.
Crash Triggers Midnight Rescue
The accident unfolded on one of India’s busiest access-controlled highways when the bus reportedly lost control after colliding with a trailer before veering off the expressway and falling into a roadside gorge.
According to preliminary findings shared by police, the impact was severe enough to throw passengers sleeping on the upper berths onto those below, leaving several with serious injuries. Women and children were among those hurt in the crash.
Moments later, flames engulfed the rear portion of the bus, forcing terrified passengers to scramble for safety. While some managed to escape before the fire spread, others had to be rescued from the damaged vehicle by emergency teams and local residents who reached the site soon after the accident.
Police, ambulance services and rescue personnel responded immediately after receiving information about the crash. The injured were rushed to Dausa District Hospital, where doctors began emergency treatment before referring several critically injured passengers to specialised medical centres for advanced care.
Additional Superintendent of Police Yogendra Faujdar, Deputy Superintendent of Police Dharmendra Kumar, Kotwali Station House Officer Bhagwan Sahay Sharma, Sub-Divisional Officer Sanju Meena and Tehsildar Gajanan Meena visited the hospital to monitor treatment arrangements.
Officials instructed doctors to provide prompt and comprehensive medical care to every injured passenger. Police have not yet released the identities of all those who lost their lives, as authorities continue informing family members.
Investigation Underway
Investigators have seized both the private bus and the trailer involved in the collision as they work to determine the exact sequence of events that led to the tragedy.
Preliminary findings suggest the bus went out of control after hitting the trailer, but officials have said that the investigation is ongoing and that technical inspections, eyewitness statements and other evidence will be examined before any conclusions are reached.
Authorities are expected to look into possible factors including the condition of the vehicles, speed, visibility, road conditions and whether driver fatigue or any mechanical issues played a role.
The accident also temporarily disrupted traffic on the Delhi–Mumbai Expressway as rescue operations and vehicle recovery continued. The expressway, one of India’s flagship infrastructure projects, is designed to improve connectivity and reduce travel time between major cities.
