What was initially believed to be a fatal accident at Maharashtra’s Lohagad Fort has turned into a high-profile murder investigation after Pune police alleged that 25-year-old businessman Ketan Agarwal was pushed into a gorge by his fiancée, 20-year-old Siya Goyal, and her alleged partner, 22-year-old Chetan Chaudhary, on June 18.
According to investigators, the accused were in a relationship and viewed Agarwal as an obstacle to their future together. Police have stated that both accused confessed during questioning, though the admissibility and evidentiary value of those statements will be determined during legal proceedings.
The case gained nationwide attention after an emotional Instagram tribute posted from Goyal’s account following Agarwal’s death resurfaced online after her arrest.
While Ketan’s family has demanded a wider probe and alleged that there had been an earlier attempt on his life, authorities continue to examine digital records, witness statements and forensic evidence as the investigation progresses.
From Tragedy To Murder Probe
Ketan Agarwal, a resident of Gahunje in Pune district and a director associated with his family’s real-estate business, died after falling into a gorge at the popular Lohagad Fort near Lonavala. Initially, the incident was treated as an accidental fall, with reports suggesting he had slipped while taking photographs at the fort.
However, subsequent investigations reportedly uncovered evidence that led police to suspect foul play. Officials allege that Siya Goyal and Chetan Chaudhary had planned the murder and deliberately took Agarwal to the fort before pushing him into the gorge.
The case drew widespread public attention after an Instagram story allegedly posted by Goyal following Agarwal’s death went viral. In the post, she expressed grief over losing her fiancé, writing, “You left me on my birthday. You left when we were so close to getting married,” alongside videos of the couple together and the caption, “Mere dil ko pata hai ki tu yahi hai. Wapas aaja” (“My heart knows that you are here. Come back”).
After news of the alleged confession emerged, screenshots and recordings of the tribute spread rapidly across social media platforms, with many users expressing shock over the contrast between the post and the allegations against her.
Investigators have stated that the accused were allegedly in a relationship for nearly a year and that Goyal did not wish to proceed with her engagement to Agarwal. Police officials involved in the investigation have reportedly said that the duo viewed him as an obstacle and conspired to eliminate him.
Family Alleges Earlier Attempt
The investigation took another dramatic turn when Ketan’s father, Vishal Agarwal, publicly claimed that his son’s killing was not an isolated act but the culmination of an earlier failed attempt. Speaking to media outlets, he alleged that Goyal and Chaudhary had first attempted to kill Ketan on June 14 but were unsuccessful.
“They took him back to the fort on June 18 to execute the crime,” he said, urging authorities to thoroughly investigate the circumstances leading up to his son’s death.
Vishal Agarwal has also called for a broader investigation into whether other individuals may have been aware of the alleged conspiracy. He has publicly stated that he suspects some members of Goyal’s family may have had prior knowledge of events surrounding the case and has appealed for all those involved to be brought to justice if evidence supports such claims.
At present, however, police have focused their investigation on the alleged roles of Goyal and Chaudhary. Investigators are examining mobile phone records, digital communications and other electronic evidence to establish a detailed timeline of events.
Family members have further claimed that Ketan had grown suspicious about the closeness between Goyal and Chaudhary before his death. Authorities are now working to determine whether those concerns were communicated to others and whether they have any relevance to the motive being examined by investigators.
The case has also prompted comparisons on social media with other recent relationship-related murder investigations in which deaths were initially portrayed as accidents, although legal experts caution that every case must be judged solely on its own facts and evidence.
