A devastating fire at an animation and gaming training centre in Lucknow’s Aliganj area on June 22 claimed at least 15 lives, including engaged couple Neelesh Kumar, 27, and Anamika Samant, 30, whose wedding plans were underway. The two had met while working at the institute and were looking forward to a new chapter in their lives when the blaze engulfed the three-storey building.
Officials said several others were injured and an investigation is underway into the cause of the fire and possible safety violations. Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath ordered a Special Investigation Team probe, announced compensation for victims’ families, while police arrested four people, including the building and institute owners.
A Love Story Cut Short By Tragedy
Friends and relatives recalled that Neelesh was expecting a promotion and salary hike, while Anamika’s parents had recently travelled from West Bengal to meet his family ahead of their marriage. The couple had even booked train tickets for wedding-related plans.
Most of those killed were students and young professionals in their twenties. Deputy Chief Minister Brajesh Pathak said survivors described how smoke rapidly spread through the building, trapping people inside. Rescue teams brought 22 people to hospital, where 15 were declared dead. The state government announced ₹5 lakh ex gratia for families of the deceased and ₹50,000 for the injured.
Probe Intensifies Amid Questions
Preliminary findings suggest the fire may have originated from an electrical short circuit in a pet clinic on the ground floor before spreading through the commercial complex. Investigators have found that the structure was approved as a residential building but had reportedly been used for commercial activities since 2014.
The Lucknow Development Authority said 16 officials are under scrutiny, while four government officials have been suspended and four accused arrested in connection with the tragedy. Authorities have sealed the premises as multiple inquiries seek to establish accountability.
The Logical Indian’s Perspective
Behind every death toll are dreams, relationships and futures that can never be restored. The loss of Neelesh and Anamika, who were preparing for marriage and building their lives together, underlines the human cost of negligence and inadequate safety enforcement.
Such tragedies demand not only swift accountability but also stronger compliance mechanisms to ensure that public spaces are safe for students and workers alike. How can authorities, institutions and citizens work together to ensure that preventable disasters do not continue to rob families of their loved ones and aspirations?
