India’s Unified Payments Interface (UPI) is now operational at several locations across France, including major airports and the Eiffel Tower, marking another milestone in the global expansion of India’s digital payment ecosystem.
The development was confirmed by Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri, who said discussions are underway to extend UPI services to more French cities.
The move is expected to benefit Indian tourists, students and business travellers by enabling seamless digital payments abroad using a familiar platform, while also strengthening India-France cooperation in technology and digital infrastructure.
The latest expansion reflects India’s broader push to internationalise its digital public infrastructure and position UPI as a globally accepted payment system.
UPI Reaches French Landmarks
India’s flagship digital payment platform has expanded its footprint in France, with UPI now available at several major airports and at the Eiffel Tower, one of the world’s most visited tourist attractions.
Speaking on the growing adoption of the system, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri said, “UPI is already available in several locations in France now. It is available at quite a few major airports, at the very least. I understand it is also available at the Eiffel Tower, where it was launched, and there are discussions on expanding its availability to other cities as well.”
His remarks highlight the increasing acceptance of India’s home-grown digital payment infrastructure beyond its borders. For Indian travellers, the development promises greater convenience by reducing dependence on cash exchanges and international card networks while making transactions more familiar and accessible.
The Eiffel Tower launch, in particular, carries symbolic significance as it places an Indian-developed digital platform at one of the most recognised landmarks in the world. It also underscores growing confidence among international merchants and payment partners in UPI’s reliability, scalability and ease of use.
As outbound travel from India continues to rise, especially to Europe, the availability of UPI at key transit hubs and tourist destinations could help simplify everyday spending for millions of Indians travelling abroad.
India’s Digital Infrastructure Goes Global
Introduced in 2016 by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), UPI has transformed the way people make payments in India by enabling instant bank-to-bank transactions through mobile devices.
Over the past decade, it has become the backbone of India’s digital economy, processing billions of transactions every month and emerging as a global case study in financial innovation and inclusion. Its success has been driven by interoperability across banks, low transaction costs, real-time settlements and widespread merchant acceptance.
France is among a growing number of countries where UPI has been introduced or integrated with local payment ecosystems as part of India’s broader strategy to internationalise its digital public infrastructure.
The expansion also reflects the strengthening relationship between India and France, which have deepened cooperation across sectors including technology, trade, defence and innovation.
Digital payments are increasingly becoming another area of collaboration between the two countries. By enabling smoother financial transactions for tourists, students, entrepreneurs and professionals, UPI’s presence in France has the potential to boost people-to-people exchanges and commercial interactions.
Discussions to expand UPI to additional French cities suggest that the initiative is still evolving and could soon become more widely available across retail, hospitality and tourism sectors.
More broadly, the development showcases how digital solutions designed to address domestic challenges can find relevance on the global stage, reinforcing India’s reputation as a leader in digital innovation.
The Logical Indian’s Perspective
The expansion of UPI into France is more than a story about payments; it is a story about how technology can build bridges between people, cultures and economies. At a time when the world is increasingly interconnected, innovations that simplify everyday life and promote inclusion deserve recognition.
UPI’s international growth demonstrates how accessible and affordable digital tools can empower individuals, improve convenience and strengthen global cooperation. It also highlights the value of creating public digital infrastructure that serves people across social and economic backgrounds rather than a select few. As countries explore new models of digital transformation, India’s experience with UPI offers important lessons in scale, accessibility and innovation.
