Dr Meenakshi Sood, a 37-year-old government paediatrician posted at the Civil Hospital in Kapurthala, was found dead at her rented home in Kewal Vihar, Jalandhar, on Wednesday morning in an apparent suicide. Her grieving parents have accused her husband, Dr Piyush Sood an ophthalmologist operating the National Eye Care Hospital of severe physical violence, infidelity, and massive financial fraud, including forging her signature for a ₹2.5 crore loan.

Dr Meenakshi had been living separately since July 2025 following a strangulation attempt by her husband, requesting only her financial release for a mutual divorce. In the latest development, Jalandhar Police have registered a case against Dr Piyush Sood under Section 108 (Abetment of Suicide) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), and multiple police teams are conducting raids across states as he remains absconding with his mobile phone switched off.

The Discovery at Kewal Vihar

The tragedy came to light when the Jalandhar Police control room received an emergency alert regarding Dr Meenakshi’s residence. Responding officers found the premises securely locked from the inside. In the presence of local residents, police personnel breached the house by breaking a glass door panel to gain entry.

Inside, they discovered Dr Meenakshi’s body on the floor. While primary site assessments indicate she took her own life due to extreme psychological distress, the police cordoned off the scene for forensic teams. Investigators are currently awaiting the final post-mortem report to establish the definitive medical cause of death.

From Marriage to Separation: A History of Abuse

According to the official First Information Report (FIR) lodged by the victim’s father, Pramod Kumar, the couple married in October 2018. While they initially projected the image of a successful medical partnership, the family reveals that the marriage was defined by severe domestic violence.

Dr Meenakshi’s mother, Neelam, recounted that her daughter frequently faced physical assaults. Dr Piyush would occasionally call after these violent episodes to admit to the beatings and offer temporary apologies. The situation took a critical turn when Dr Piyush allegedly attempted to strangulate her. Fearing for her life, Dr Meenakshi alerted a police helpline, walked away from their shared home, and moved into a rented accommodation where she spent the final year of her life preparing for a divorce.

The Crores in Her Name: Allegations of Forgery and Fraud

The marital breakdown worsened significantly as Dr Meenakshi uncovered a systemic web of financial exploitation orchestrated behind her back. Early in the marriage, she had willingly taken out an initial loan of ₹35 lakh to help Dr Piyush establish his private practice, the National Eye Care Hospital, diligently repaying the instalments directly from her own government salary. Over time, further commercial liabilities and a separate loan to purchase a Mahindra Thar SUV were secretly registered in her name, pushing her visible operational debt to roughly ₹45 lakh.

The definitive breaking point arrived when Dr Meenakshi recently approached a banking institution to check her CIBIL credit score, planning to purchase a house of her own. To her horror, she was informed that a massive, active loan of ₹2.5 crore was already running under her name. Upon inspecting the bank records, she discovered that the transaction documents carried entirely forged signatures. When she confronted Dr Piyush and his father, Yogeshwar Sood, demanding they return the ₹70 lakh she had spent on his hospital and release her name from the fraudulent ₹2.5 crore debt for a mutual divorce, she was reportedly met with severe hostility and threats, causing her immense, compounding mental agony.

CCTV Clues and the Extramarital Affair

Compounding the physical abuse and financial betrayal, Dr Meenakshi discovered that her husband was allegedly involved in an extramarital relationship with a woman employed at his own hospital. Suspicious of his activities, Dr Meenakshi checked the CCTV footage of National Eye Care Hospital. The digital backup reportedly captured clear evidence of the affair. This video footage was secured by Dr Meenakshi and has been formally submitted to the police by her family to establish the immense mental harassment that drove her to the edge.

Legal Charges and the Search for Dr Piyush

The Jalandhar Police have formally initiated criminal proceedings against the accused doctor.Legal Status: Dr Piyush Sood has been booked under Section 108 (Abetment of Suicide) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) at the Division Number 6 Police Station in Jalandhar.Station House Officer (SHO) Sushil Kumar stated that immediate raids were conducted at Dr Piyush’s residence and the National Eye Care Hospital.

However, the accused switched off his mobile devices and went into hiding immediately after the body was discovered. Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (ADCP) Rakesh Kumar Yadav confirmed that multiple police teams are currently tracking digital footprints and conducting extensive raids to apprehend him.

The Logical Indian’s Perspective

The tragic loss of Dr Meenakshi Sood is a heart-wrenching reminder of how deep the shadows of domestic abuse, financial coercion, and mental harassment can run, even behind the closed doors of highly educated, successful households. It takes immense courage to walk away from an abusive marriage, yet Dr Meenakshi did exactly that, seeking nothing but her financial freedom and peace of mind. To trap a partner under crores of fraudulent debt using forged signatures is not just economic abuse; it is a calculated containment of their freedom.

We at The Logical Indian believe that true societal progress cannot exist without safety, empathy, and absolute respect within our families. No individual should ever be driven to such loneliness and despair by the very person who promised to stand by them. We call upon the Punjab Police to ensure a swift, transparent investigation so that justice is served.
