President Droupadi Murmu, the Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces, conferred 51 Gallantry Awards on personnel from the Armed Forces, Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs), and police services during an investiture ceremony held at Rashtrapati Bhavan, New Delhi.
The awards, announced to recognise exceptional bravery, devotion to duty, and selfless service, included seven Kirti Chakras (two posthumous), 15 Vir Chakras (three posthumous), and 29 Shaurya Chakras (one posthumous).
The recipients were honoured for acts of courage carried out in counter-terrorism operations, anti-insurgency missions, security operations, and rescue efforts across the country.
The ceremony also paid tribute to personnel who made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty, with family members of posthumous awardees receiving the honours on their behalf.
While no detailed statement from the President was released as part of the ceremony proceedings referenced here, the awards collectively reflected the nation’s gratitude towards security personnel who continue to safeguard India’s sovereignty, public safety, and national interests under often challenging and life-threatening conditions.
Honouring Extraordinary Bravery
The Gallantry Awards are among India’s highest civilian and military recognitions for courage and are conferred upon individuals who demonstrate exceptional valour in the face of grave danger.
This year’s ceremony highlighted the diverse and demanding roles performed by members of the Armed Forces, CAPFs, and police organisations, many of whom operate in hostile environments away from public view.
The seven Kirti Chakras, India’s second-highest peacetime gallantry award after the Ashoka Chakra, were awarded for conspicuous bravery and self-sacrifice, with two recipients honoured posthumously.
Meanwhile, 15 personnel received the Vir Chakra, India’s third-highest wartime gallantry decoration, recognising acts of bravery in the presence of the enemy; three of these awards were bestowed posthumously.
The largest category, comprising 29 Shaurya Chakras, recognised courageous actions in situations involving significant risk but not necessarily direct combat, including anti-terror operations and rescue missions. One Shaurya Chakra was awarded posthumously.
The ceremony was marked by emotional moments as family members of fallen personnel stepped forward to receive medals on behalf of their loved ones, underscoring the personal cost behind every citation.
The honours also reflected the collective efforts of India’s security agencies, whose members frequently operate in conflict-prone regions, along sensitive borders, and in areas affected by terrorism or insurgency.
Their stories, though often unknown to the wider public, illustrate extraordinary commitment to protecting lives and maintaining peace under difficult circumstances.
Legacy of Service and Sacrifice
Gallantry awards have long occupied a significant place within India’s system of national honours, serving both as recognition of individual heroism and as a reminder of the sacrifices made by those entrusted with safeguarding the nation.
The Kirti Chakra, Vir Chakra, and Shaurya Chakra each recognise different forms of bravery, but all share a common purpose: acknowledging courage displayed when personal safety is placed secondary to duty.
Over the decades, recipients of these honours have come from diverse operational backgrounds, including military engagements, counter-insurgency operations, anti-terror missions, disaster response efforts, and law enforcement actions.
This year’s awardees continue that tradition, representing a broad cross-section of India’s security architecture. The recognition comes at a time when security personnel increasingly face complex and evolving challenges, ranging from cross-border threats and terrorism to internal security concerns and humanitarian emergencies.
The presence of bereaved families at Rashtrapati Bhavan also highlighted the enduring impact of service-related sacrifices on loved ones and communities. Beyond celebrating individual acts of courage, the ceremony reaffirmed the importance of institutional values such as discipline, integrity, resilience, and public service.
It served as a reminder that behind every medal is a story of determination, difficult choices, and an unwavering commitment to the safety and well-being of fellow citizens.
The Logical Indian’s Perspective
Gallantry awards are not merely symbols of military or operational achievement; they are reminders of the profound human values that underpin public service courage, responsibility, sacrifice, and commitment to the greater good.
As India honours members of the Armed Forces, CAPFs, and police services, it is equally important to acknowledge the families who bear the emotional burden of service and loss. Recognition of bravery should inspire not only national pride but also a deeper appreciation of the human cost associated with conflict, security challenges, and emergency response efforts.
