Indian national Anshul Kuncha, about 28-year-old from Telangana living in the United States, was shot dead in Philadelphia after responding to what his family alleges was a fake pizza delivery order designed to lure him to a vacant property.
According to Philadelphia Police, the shooting took place shortly after midnight at the Raymond Rosen Homes housing complex in North Philadelphia. Kuncha had reportedly arrived to deliver a pizza order when he was shot multiple times. He was rushed to Temple University Hospital but succumbed to his injuries. Police say the attackers fled the scene and no arrests have been made so far.
His family claims the attack was a deliberate trap because no belongings were stolen, while investigators continue to review surveillance footage, forensic evidence and phone records linked to the order. The Consulate General of India in New York is assisting the family and coordinating with local authorities. The case has renewed concerns about the safety of Indian students, professionals and gig workers in the United States.
Family Alleges It Was A Planned Trap
Kuncha’s family has strongly disputed the possibility that the shooting was a robbery gone wrong. His sister, Tanvi Kuncha, has alleged that the delivery order itself was a trap designed to lure him to a deserted location.
The family points out that none of his belongings were reportedly stolen after the attack. This has led them to believe that the attackers specifically targeted him. They have urged authorities to conduct a comprehensive investigation and bring those responsible to justice.
Their appeal has attracted widespread attention on social media, where many have expressed solidarity with the family and demanded swift action from law enforcement agencies.
Investigation Underway
Philadelphia Police have confirmed that the delivery address was linked to a vacant property, a detail that has become central to the investigation. Investigators are reviewing surveillance footage that reportedly shows Kuncha approaching the location with pizza boxes while two individuals dressed in dark clothing followed him. Although the shooting itself was not captured on camera, authorities believe the footage could help identify suspects.
Police have recovered shell casings from the scene and are examining the phone number used to place the order. According to the Hindu, officials have also announced a reward of up to $20,000 for information leading to an arrest and conviction. At present, investigators have not publicly identified a motive and have not ruled out any possibilities.
A Young Life Cut Short
Like many Indian students and professionals who move abroad seeking better opportunities, Kuncha had travelled to the United States for higher studies before securing employment. Reports suggest he worked part-time as a pizza delivery driver in addition to his regular job, a common practice among students and young professionals managing living expenses abroad.
Friends and family describe him as hardworking and ambitious. His death has therefore resonated deeply within the Indian community, highlighting the challenges and risks faced by many migrants pursuing education and careers overseas.
Indian Authorities Offer Support
The Consulate General of India in New York has expressed condolences and confirmed that it is in touch with local authorities and Kuncha’s family.
Officials have said they are providing all possible assistance, including support related to the investigation and the repatriation of his mortal remains to India.
The incident has drawn significant attention in Telangana, where community members and local leaders have called for a thorough investigation and timely justice.
Concerns Over Delivery Worker Safety
The case has also renewed concerns about the safety of delivery workers, particularly those working late-night shifts.

In January 2024, Haryana resident Vivek Saini was killed during an attack at a convenience store in Georgia where he worked. The incident generated widespread outrage in India.
The same year, Purdue University student Sameer Kamath was found dead in Indiana, while Indian student Shreyas Reddy Benigeri was discovered deceased in Ohio. Although the circumstances varied, the cases contributed to growing anxiety among Indian families.
In another widely discussed case, Indian student Syed Mazahir Ali survived a violent assault in Chicago after a video showing him injured went viral online.
Earlier incidents have also left a lasting impact. In 2022, Indian-origin student Varun Manish Chheda was killed at Purdue University. In 2017, Indian engineer Srinivas Kuchibhotla was shot dead in Kansas in a hate crime that drew international condemnation.
While authorities have treated these cases separately and motives have differed, the incidents collectively have fuelled concerns about personal safety, gun violence and the vulnerabilities faced by international students and immigrants in the US.
Investigation Continues
Philadelphia Police continue to analyse surveillance footage, forensic evidence and telecommunications data in an effort to identify those responsible for Kuncha’s killing.
For his family, however, the wait for answers remains painful. They continue to seek justice while mourning the loss of a young man whose future was abruptly cut short.
The case has become a stark reminder of the risks that can accompany seemingly routine work and has sparked broader conversations about safety, migration and support systems for international students and workers abroad.
