D.K. Shivakumar took oath as the Chief Minister of Karnataka alongside 13 Cabinet ministers at the Lok Bhavan in Bengaluru on Wednesday, 3 June 2026.
Governor Thaawarchand Gehlot administered the oath of office in a high-profile ceremony attended by the Congress top brass, including Rahul Gandhi and Mallikarjun Kharge. Senior Dalit leader Dr. G. Parameshwara was sworn in as the sole Deputy Chief Minister. The event marked the completion of a planned leadership changeover following the resignation of outgoing Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, balancing representation across veteran loyalists and newer faces in the state council.
A New Leadership Era Begins
The swearing-in ceremony, restricted to about 3,000 guests at the Lok Bhavan Glass House, reflected a strategic selection of Cabinet members approved by the Congress high command.
Prominent leaders such as M.B. Patil, Priyank Kharge, and K.J. George returned to the Cabinet, while notable additions included U.T. Khader and Yathindra Siddaramaiah, the son of the former Chief Minister. Following the ceremony, Chief Minister Shivakumar emphasized his dedication to inclusive governance, stating, “On my shoulders rests the responsibility of working tirelessly to fulfil the hopes, aspirations and dreams of crores of Kannadigas.” He also signalled a focus on the state’s future demographics, asserting, “I will have to take every section of society together, from the farmer to the woman, to the youth, and a new ‘Yuva Yuga’ (youth era) will start.”
The Path to the Top Office
This political transition materialised three years after the Congress party secured a decisive majority of 135 seats in the 224-member state assembly during the 2023 elections.
Shivakumar, an eight-time Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) from Kanakapura, has long been regarded as the party’s primary “troubleshooter” for his history of safeguarding party unity and managing organizational crises. The change of guard follows a formal power-sharing agreement, culminating in Siddaramaiah stepping down on 26 May 2026 to pave the way for the internal transition. Reflecting on his journey, Shivakumar remarked, “It was not a dream. It was a dedication. Dedication with hard work… Though it has been delayed, it was not denied,” while expressing gratitude to the central leadership for their sustained trust.
