Following a formal complaint by a 27-year-old Hindu woman, the Central Police Station in Ulhasnagar, Thane, Maharashtra, is investigating a case of identity fraud, forced religious conversion, and domestic abuse. On Monday, the victim accused her husband, 33-year-old Imran Sheikh, of posing as a Hindu named “Vijay” in 2019 to trap her into a relationship. She alleges she was later taken to Bihar, forced into an Islamic marriage, confined, and pressured to abandon her faith. The police have registered an FIR against seven people and arrested Imran Sheikh and his two brothers, Salman and Shahbaz, who are now in custody. While local socio-political groups view this as a systemic case of “love jihad,” authorities are verifying the timeline against Maharashtra’s newly proposed anti-conversion laws.
An investigation has been launched by the Central Police Station in Ulhasnagar, Thane district, Maharashtra, following a formal complaint by a 27-year-old Hindu woman. The complainant has accused her husband and his family of multi-layered fraud, including identity concealment, forced religious conversion, and severe domestic abuse. The case has attracted widespread public attention and has been labeled by local groups and media outlets as an instance of “love jihad.”
The Deception and Forced Marriage
According to the First Information Report (FIR), the relationship began in 2019 in Ulhasnagar. The accused, Imran Sheikh (33), worked at a local automobile garage and allegedly introduced himself under the false Hindu alias of “Vijay.” Over several months, Sheikh befriended the woman, concealing his religious background to build intimacy and gain her trust. Believing his identity to be true, she entered into a relationship with him under the assumption that they shared the same faith.
Later that year, under the pretext of formalizing their relationship, Sheikh allegedly convinced the woman to travel with him to his native village in Bihar. The victim reported that upon arriving at his family home, Sheikh’s true identity was suddenly revealed. Stranded far from home, she alleged she was pressured and coerced into an Islamic marriage ceremony.
Allegations of Religious Coercion and Abuse
The situation escalated significantly following the marriage, transforming into a systematic pattern of emotional, psychological, and physical harassment orchestrated by Imran Sheikh and his extended family. In her detailed statement to the police, the woman outlined how she was systematically stripped of her religious freedom, alleging that she was forced to abandon her personal Hindu rituals, wear a burqa and hijab, and cease worshipping Hindu deities entirely.
Furthermore, she was subjected to continuous dietary coercion, stating she was pressured to consume beef against her deepest religious beliefs, while Sheikh and his relatives frequently subjected her to highly derogatory and objectionable remarks regarding Hindu gods and goddesses.
The intensity of this psychological abuse and physical confinement reportedly grew far worse after the birth of the couple’s child, and took an even darker turn when the victim discovered that Sheikh had allegedly married another woman, dismissing her protests by stating his personal laws permitted multiple marriages.
Return to Ulhasnagar and Police Action
The family eventually moved back to Ulhasnagar, where the victim claimed the domestic violence and mental torment continued unabated. Escaping the abusive environment, she approached senior officials at the Central Police Station to file a formal complaint.
The police acted swiftly upon receiving the report on Monday. A case was registered naming a total of seven accused individuals, including Imran Sheikh, his parents, and his brothers.
Law enforcement officials have since arrested Imran Sheikh alongside two of his brothers, Salman Sheikh and Shahbaz Sheikh. The three accused were presented before a local court, which remanded them to police custody. A manhunt is currently underway to apprehend the remaining four relatives named in the FIR.
The Central Police have booked the accused under multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including Section 85 (cruelty by husband or relatives), Section 75(2) (sexual harassment), Section 299 (deliberate acts to outrage religious feelings), Section 318(4) (cheating), and Sections 351 and 352 (criminal intimidation and intentional insult).
The emergence of this case coincides with heightened legal and social focus on interfaith marriages involving alleged fraud in Maharashtra. In March 2026, the state assembly passed the Maharashtra Freedom of Religion Bill, a legislative measure specifically designed to penalize religious conversions carried out through coercion, inducement, fraud, misrepresentation, or deception. Under the provisions of this recent bill, anyone found guilty of executing unlawful conversions under the pretext of marriage faces up to seven years of rigorous imprisonment and heavy fines.
The Logical Indian’s Perspective
At The Logical Indian, we believe that the bedrock of any healthy society rests on the pillars of mutual trust, transparency, and deep empathy. A relationship built on a foundation of lies, identity concealment, and emotional manipulation is an affront to human dignity and individual freedom.
Every individual possesses an absolute right to their faith, identity, and personal boundaries; forcing someone to abandon their beliefs or coercing them into practices against their will shatters the basic principles of kindness and peaceful coexistence.
While the law must take its natural, strict course to ensure justice for the victim, it is equally vital for us as a community to look beyond polarized narratives and focus on fostering an environment of harmony, where safety, mutual respect, and honest dialogue thrive. True social change can only begin when we cultivate a culture that fiercely protects the vulnerable while rejecting hatred in all its forms.
