‘Mamata Head Of Criminals’: RG Kar Victim’s Mother Attacks TMC Chief After 3 IPS Officers Suspended Over Probe Lapses

The suspension of three senior officers in the RG Kar case has reignited political tensions, with the victim’s mother alleging institutional cover-up and demanding accountability.

Ratna Debnath, mother of the RG Kar Medical College rape and murder victim and newly elected BJP MLA from Panihati, has intensified her criticism of former West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee after the suspension of three senior IPS officers over alleged lapses in the handling of the case.

Speaking on Friday, Debnath called Banerjee the “head of criminals” and alleged that the full truth behind her daughter’s death would emerge only if the former chief minister was “caught and jailed”. Her remarks came amid fresh scrutiny of the investigation after the West Bengal government ordered disciplinary action against former Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Goyal, along with IPS officers Indira Mukherjee and Abhishek Gupta, over accusations of negligence and procedural irregularities during the early stages of the probe.

Fresh Suspensions Reignite Demands For Accountability

The latest development has revived public and political attention on the 2024 rape and murder of a trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, a case that had triggered nationwide protests over women’s safety and alleged institutional failures. According to official statements, the suspended officers face departmental proceedings over “administrative lapses” and alleged mishandling of evidence, communication, and interactions with the victim’s family during the investigation. Current West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari said the government would reopen scrutiny into several aspects of the case and examine call records, WhatsApp conversations and alleged attempts to influence the victim’s family.

Speaking to reporters in North 24 Parganas, Debnath alleged that “many criminals” were involved in shielding the truth and claimed that influential political figures and officials had escaped accountability. She further accused sections of the previous administration of attempting to suppress evidence and mislead the public during the initial investigation. Her comments reflect the continuing distrust felt by the victim’s family, who have repeatedly alleged that the crime scene was tampered with and that officials attempted to pressure them into silence.

A Case That Reshaped Bengal’s Political Landscape

The RG Kar case has remained one of West Bengal’s most politically and emotionally charged issues over the past two years. The victim’s parents emerged as prominent public voices demanding justice, transparency and institutional accountability. Earlier this week, the family approached a Sealdah court seeking the arrest of former MLA Nirmal Ghosh and local Trinamool Congress leaders, alleging interference during the handling of the victim’s body after the crime.

The outrage surrounding the case significantly influenced political discourse in the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections. Ratna Debnath contested the polls on a BJP ticket and won from the Panihati constituency, turning her campaign into a broader call for women’s safety and justice reform. Her rise from grieving mother to elected representative highlighted the depth of public anger over the case and transformed the incident into a wider debate about policing, governance and accountability in Bengal.

Meanwhile, the opposition BJP has continued to accuse the Trinamool Congress leadership of protecting those allegedly involved in mishandling the investigation, while Trinamool leaders have maintained that the state government cooperated with all court-monitored probes. The Central Bureau of Investigation continues to handle key aspects of the case under judicial supervision and several petitions linked to the investigation remain pending before courts in Kolkata.

The Logical Indian’s Perspective

The RG Kar case continues to highlight the devastating human cost of delayed justice and the erosion of public trust when institutions appear opaque or politically influenced. While grief and anger are understandable reactions from families seeking accountability, it is equally important that investigations remain transparent, evidence-driven and free from political pressure.

The larger conversation must focus on strengthening systems that protect women, ensure institutional accountability and restore faith in justice delivery. As public scrutiny intensifies once again, how can governments and institutions ensure that justice is both delivered and seen to be delivered in cases involving public outrage and political sensitivity?
