Following the first cabinet meeting of the newly formed Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government in West Bengal, Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari announced that the flagship ‘Lakshmir Bhandar’ financial assistance scheme, initiated by the previous Mamata Banerjee-led administration, will continue.
This decision aims to provide continuity for millions of women beneficiaries across the state. While the transition of power marks a significant political shift, the new administration has prioritised social security, ensuring that existing welfare benefits are not disrupted despite the change in leadership.
Commitment To Continuity
Speaking to reporters after the cabinet briefing, Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari clarified the government’s stance on the popular welfare programme. “Our government is committed to the welfare of the people of West Bengal. We will not stop ‘Lakshmir Bhandar’; rather, we will ensure it reaches every eligible woman with greater efficiency,” Adhikari stated.
Currently, the scheme provides monthly financial support to women from underprivileged backgrounds, and officials have indicated that the administrative framework will remain intact to avoid any delay in disbursements. By retaining this scheme, the BJP government seeks to address concerns regarding the potential withdrawal of Trinamool Congress-era policies.
The Evolution Of State Welfare
Launched in 2021, ‘Lakshmir Bhandar’ became a cornerstone of the Mamata Banerjee government’s social outreach, providing ₹1,000 to ₹1,200 monthly to female heads of households. Throughout the high-octane election campaign, the future of this scheme was a central point of debate, with many voters expressing anxiety over its possible discontinuation.
Historically, West Bengal has seen intense political rivalry where new administrations often overhaul the projects of their predecessors. However, the current move suggests a strategic shift towards administrative stability, acknowledging the deep impact the scheme has had on rural and urban household economies over the last three years.
The Logical Indian’s Perspective
At The Logical Indian, we believe that the true essence of governance lies in placing the welfare of the citizen above partisan politics. The decision to continue a beneficial social security scheme, regardless of which party initiated it, is a commendable step toward political maturity and empathy.
In a climate often dominated by divisiveness, such gestures of continuity foster harmony and reassure the most vulnerable sections of society that their well-being is not a pawn in a power struggle. Governance should always be about building upon progress rather than dismantling it for the sake of optics.
