Indore police have launched a high-level investigation after three abandoned bags containing bundles of cash totaling an estimated ₹2.83 crore were discovered on the Indore-Ujjain road in Madhya Pradesh on Thursday, May 7, 2026. A local farmer first spotted the suspicious luggage near the Sanwer-Ujjain stretch, alerting the authorities to what initially appeared to be a massive haul of wealth.

The incident came to light around 10:00 a.m. when a farmer noticed the bags lying unattended near his field and informed the Sanwer police. The discovery quickly drew a massive crowd, requiring police to cordon off the area before opening the bags. Inside, they found 566 bundles that mimicked the appearance of ₹500 denominations.
According to TI Girjashankar Mahodia, the bundles were meticulously prepared with genuine notes placed only at the top and bottom, while the middle layers consisted of plain paper. “The notes appeared authentic at first glance, but once we began examining individual bundles, the pattern became clear.
This was deliberate placement,” Mahodia stated. Additional DC Rupesh Dwivedi further confirmed that the case is being handled with extreme seriousness, noting that specialists are being brought in to verify every note and determine the exact origin of the materials used.
Contextualizing the Counterfeit Crisis
This discovery follows a string of financial crimes in the region, including a recent high-profile extortion case in Bhopal, highlighting a growing trend of organized white-collar crime in Madhya Pradesh. Authorities suspect the bags may have been discarded by a gang in a panic, possibly due to increased police patrolling or a failed “black money” scam where victims are shown stacks of “cash” that are mostly paper.
Currently, investigators are scanning CCTV footage from the Indore-Ujjain highway to identify the vehicle used to dump the bags. The incident has raised significant alarms regarding the circulation of high-quality counterfeits that could potentially destabilize local markets if left unchecked.
