A 63-year-old passenger from Kerala has been arrested by Bengaluru airport police after a cabin crew member of a Gulf airline accused him of sexually harassing her during a Bahrain-to-Bengaluru international flight on 4 May.
According to the complaint filed by the air hostess upon landing at Kempegowda International Airport, the accused allegedly made inappropriate physical contact while she was carrying out her duties mid-flight.
The airline crew immediately escalated the matter to the flight captain, following standard safety procedures, and the incident was reported to airport authorities upon arrival.
Police registered a case under provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita relating to sexual harassment and took the passenger into custody for questioning. Investigations are ongoing, with statements being recorded from both the complainant and the accused.
Mid-Air Allegation, Immediate Crew Report
As per the First Information Report and initial statements recorded by the authorities, the incident allegedly occurred when the aircraft was en route from Bahrain to Bengaluru and cabin crew were attending to passengers during routine service.
The complainant, a 24-year-old air hostess, stated that while she was performing her duties, the accused passenger allegedly behaved inappropriately by making unwelcome physical contact.
She has reportedly described that the man reached towards her from under a blanket and touched her waist area, which she immediately found distressing and inappropriate.
Following the alleged incident, she is said to have promptly informed the senior cabin crew and escalated the matter to the cockpit crew in line with airline safety protocols. The captain of the flight was informed during the journey, ensuring that the matter was formally documented even before landing.
Upon arrival at Kempegowda International Airport, the crew member lodged a written complaint with airport police, which led to immediate coordination between the airline’s ground staff and law enforcement officials. The passenger, a Kerala resident aged 63, was taken aside for questioning soon after disembarkation and subsequently arrested after preliminary verification of the complaint.
Police Action, Legal Probe Ongoing
Airport police officials confirmed that a case has been registered against the accused under Section 75(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), which pertains to sexual harassment.
Following the complaint, the police initiated a standard procedure which included recording the statement of the complainant, securing preliminary accounts from airline staff, and detaining the accused for further questioning.
Officials have stated that the investigation is being carried out based on available evidence, including the crew member’s statement, internal airline reports, and communication logs from the flight crew.
While the accused has reportedly denied any intention of wrongdoing, suggesting that the contact was misinterpreted or “friendly in nature”, investigators are treating the matter seriously given the sensitivity of allegations involving in-flight conduct.
Law enforcement authorities have emphasised that the case is at an early stage, and no conclusions will be drawn until a detailed inquiry is completed. At present, the accused remains under legal scrutiny, and further statements may be recorded from other passengers or crew members if required to establish the sequence of events.
Airline Safety, Protocols, Aviation Concerns
Incidents involving alleged misconduct onboard flights are taken seriously across the aviation sector due to the confined nature of aircraft cabins and the responsibility of airlines to ensure passenger and crew safety.
International aviation protocols require cabin crew to report any form of harassment or unsafe behaviour immediately to the cockpit, allowing commanders to make real-time decisions if necessary.
In many cases, complaints are formally documented upon landing and handed over to airport authorities for legal follow-up. This incident also highlights the increasing emphasis airlines place on crew safety training, including de-escalation procedures and reporting mechanisms designed to ensure swift action without disrupting flight safety.
In recent years, aviation regulators and airlines have strengthened internal reporting frameworks for misconduct, recognising that cabin environments can limit immediate external intervention.
While cases like these remain relatively rare, they underline the importance of strict enforcement of behavioural standards onboard and the need for passengers to adhere to codes of conduct that ensure safe and respectful travel conditions for all.
The current case is being closely monitored as part of standard investigative procedure, with authorities expected to review all available evidence before moving forward with charges or closure.
The Logical Indian’s Perspective
This incident raises important questions about safety, accountability, and dignity in shared public spaces such as aircraft cabins, where individuals from diverse backgrounds are in close proximity for extended periods. If the allegations are substantiated, it reinforces the urgent need for zero tolerance towards any form of harassment, particularly in environments where victims may feel constrained in responding immediately.
At the same time, it is equally important that due process is followed carefully so that investigations remain fair, unbiased, and rooted in evidence, ensuring justice for all parties involved. Aviation spaces are governed by strict behavioural expectations precisely because passenger and crew safety depends on mutual respect and discipline.
