A celebratory night ended in a horrific tragedy in Bihar’s Rohtas district when a speeding container truck ploughed into a group of people returning from a tilak (pre-wedding) ceremony. The incident, which occurred in the early hours of Monday on NH-319 near Mathiya village, claimed five lives and left ten others seriously injured.
The victims had just alighted from a bus and were unloading items when the out-of-control truck rammed into their vehicles and mowed down pedestrians. While the Bihar government has announced an ex-gratia of ₹4 lakh for the families of the deceased, the truck driver remains at large.
A Fateful Return From Festivities
The accident unfolded around 3:30 AM at the Belwaiya Mathiya turn under the jurisdiction of the Dinara police station. The group, predominantly comprising relatives and residents of Mathiya village, was returning from Lodhi village after attending the tilak ceremony of Ashok Kumar Singh’s daughter. According to local reports and eyewitness accounts, the tragedy struck just as the group had reached their destination. Some passengers were getting off the bus, while others were assisting in unloading catering and ceremonial items from a nearby pickup van.
The impact was so severe that both the bus and the pickup van were mangled, trapping several victims underneath the heavy wheels of the container truck. Dinara SHO Dharmendra Prasad confirmed the identities of the deceased as Ashok Kumar Singh (45), the bride’s father; Pintu Kumar (35); Rameshwar Singh (38); Chhotu Kumar (20); and Ram Barat Singh (44). “The collision was catastrophic. The truck first hit the pickup and then the bus before running over those standing nearby,” the SHO stated. The ten injured individuals were initially rushed to the Primary Health Centre in Dinara and later shifted to Sadar Hospital in Sasaram for specialized treatment.
Investigation And State Response
In the immediate aftermath, a heavy police contingent, including the SDPO of Bikramganj and SHOs from neighbouring stations, reached the site to manage the rescue operations. Authorities used cranes to clear the wreckage and restore traffic on the national highway. While the container truck has been seized by the police, the driver took advantage of the darkness and chaos to flee the scene. A formal investigation has been launched to determine whether the accident was a result of driver fatigue, intoxication, or mechanical failure.
Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary expressed deep condolences over the loss of lives and directed the district administration to provide immediate assistance. Following his instructions, the local administration has already handed over ex-gratia cheques of ₹4 lakh to the next of kin of each deceased person. “The state stands with the grieving families in this hour of immense pain,” a government spokesperson said. However, for the villagers of Mathiya, the financial aid does little to fill the void left by the loss of five men, including the father of the bride whose wedding was supposed to be a milestone of joy for the entire community.
The Logical Indian’s Perspective
This incident is not just another statistic in India’s rising tally of road accidents; it is a heart-wrenching example of how a single moment of negligence can shatter multiple families. At The Logical Indian, it is believed that the recurring nature of such “accidents” on our national highways points to a systemic failure in enforcing road safety protocols during the “dead hours” of the night. Speeding, driver fatigue, and inadequate lighting on highway intersections remain silent killers that the administration must address with urgency.
We extend our deepest sympathies to the families of Ashok Kumar Singh and the other victims. It is devastating to think that a home prepared for a wedding must now prepare for five funerals. Beyond the immediate financial compensation, there must be a rigorous crackdown on over-speeding heavy vehicles and a push for better infrastructure like dedicated “halt zones” for buses on highways to protect pedestrians. Safety should never be the price we pay for mobility. How can we hold transport authorities and drivers more accountable to ensure our highways do not continue to turn into death traps for innocent commuters?
