In a renewed political development in Tamil Nadu, S. A. Chandrasekhar, father of actor-politician Thalapathy Vijay and associated with Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), has once again extended an alliance invitation to the Indian National Congress.
He urged the Congress to join hands with TVK, arguing that the party has lost political ground in the state by backing other alliances and could regain influence through collaboration. He also suggested that Vijay is open to power-sharing arrangements, hinting at possible post-poll realignments in Tamil Nadu’s evolving electoral landscape. While Congress had earlier rejected such overtures, no fresh official response has been issued so far.
“Regaining Old Glory” Pitch Resurfaces Amid Alliance Buzz
S. A. Chandrasekhar has reiterated his earlier appeal, stating that the Congress should reconsider its current political positioning in Tamil Nadu and align with TVK to “regain its old glory.” According to reports, he argued that the Congress has steadily declined in the state due to its reliance on regional alliances and that a partnership with TVK could help revive its electoral relevance. He further suggested that Vijay’s leadership carries significant public appeal and that a power-sharing model could be explored if an alliance is formed.
His remarks come at a time when Tamil Nadu’s political equations are already in flux, with new formations attempting to challenge the dominance of established Dravidian parties. Chandrasekhar’s comments have reignited debate around whether national parties like Congress should recalibrate their strategies in the state or continue strengthening existing alliances.
Congress Response
Earlier responses from the Congress leadership have been dismissive of the alliance proposal. The Tamil Nadu Congress Committee has repeatedly clarified that its partnership with the DMK remains intact and that there is no official discussion on joining hands with TVK. Party leaders have also publicly expressed confidence in their existing alliance structure and campaign strategy.
Despite this, political observers note that such repeated outreach from TVK’s camp reflects ongoing attempts to position the party as a potential kingmaker or alternative pole in Tamil Nadu politics. With TVK’s growing visibility under Vijay’s leadership, even informal discussions around alliances are being closely watched for their potential to reshape electoral arithmetic.
TVK’s Emergence And Shifting Alliances
The political landscape in Tamil Nadu has been witnessing increased fragmentation, with actor-led political movements gaining attention alongside traditional parties. TVK, led by Thalapathy Vijay, has been gradually building its organisational base and signalling ambitions to play a decisive role in future elections. Vijay himself has previously indicated openness to strategic flexibility, though he has also criticised major parties in the state during public rallies.
Earlier reports also indicated that informal discussions and speculation around potential alignments involving TVK and national parties had surfaced multiple times, though none have materialised into formal agreements. Meanwhile, the Congress continues to maintain that its alliance strategy in Tamil Nadu is stable and not under reconsideration, even as internal debates around seat-sharing and influence persist within broader opposition politics.
The Logical Indian’s Perspective
Political realignments are a natural part of India’s democratic process, but they must be driven by ideology, accountability, and long-term public interest rather than opportunistic calculations. If emerging parties like TVK are engaging in dialogue with established national forces, such discussions should be transparent and rooted in clear policy alignment, not personality-driven politics.
At the same time, established parties must also reflect on whether their strategies are truly responsive to shifting public aspirations. Tamil Nadu’s electorate has historically rewarded clarity, governance focus, and social justice narratives over purely tactical alliances. As new political voices enter the space, the responsibility lies on all stakeholders to ensure that competition strengthens democratic values rather than diluting them. As Tamil Nadu’s political landscape continues to evolve, the key question remains: should alliances be shaped by electoral arithmetic alone or by shared principles that prioritise people over power?
