Early counting trends show a decisive lead for the UDF, indicating a likely power shift in Kerala.

The Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) has surged past the crucial halfway mark in the 2026 Kerala Assembly Elections, currently leading in 77 of the 140 seats as per early counting trends. This development signals a potential shift in power from the ruling CPI(M)-led Left Democratic Front (LDF), which is currently ahead in approximately 40 to 50 seats.

The BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) is maintaining a presence in 5 constituencies, attempting to break the state’s traditionally bipolar political landscape. Counting began at 8 AM on May 4 across 140 centres, starting with postal ballots, and as trends solidify, the UDF appears poised to regain the state after a ten-year hiatus.

Shifting Tides: Key Statistics and High-Stakes Leads

The current data from the Election Commission indicates a significant blow to the incumbent government, with early reports suggesting that 12 ministers, including Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan in his home turf of Dharmadam, are trailing behind their challengers.

State Congress President Sunny Joseph attributed the UDF’s performance to the public’s rejection of what he termed “anti-people policies” of the current administration. On the other hand, Congress MP Jebi Mather expressed optimism for a landslide victory, stating, “We are expecting over 100 seats and definitely above 85.”

While the LDF is fighting for a historic third consecutive term, the UDF’s commanding lead in 77 seats well above the 71 required for a majority suggests that the mandate may be shifting toward a change in leadership.

The Path to 2026: Context and Voter Sentimen

The 2026 elections followed a high-decibel campaign where the UDF focused heavily on economic concerns, anti-incumbency, and allegations of administrative overreach. Kerala, known for its high political literacy and swinging mandates, saw a robust voter turnout of 79.63% on April 9.

This election was particularly vital for the LDF, which sought to solidify its dominance following its rare consecutive win in 2021. However, the emergence of a triangular contest in several pockets aided by the NDA’s strategic focus on seats like Palakkad and Nemom has added layers of complexity to the results.

The involvement of over 15,000 personnel in the counting process ensures that while the trends currently favor the UDF, a clearer final tally will emerge by the evening as EVM counts are completed.

The Logical Indian’s Perspective

At The Logical Indian, we believe that the true essence of a democracy lies not just in the numbers on a scoreboard, but in the peaceful transition of power and the respect for the collective will of the people. As the UDF appears set to take the reins, we hope the new leadership prioritizes inclusive growth, communal harmony, and the spirit of dialogue that Kerala is celebrated for.

While political victories are hard-won, the ultimate goal must always be the welfare of the last citizen and the strengthening of our social fabric.
