A serious road accident was narrowly averted in Himachal Pradesh’s Kangra district on Sunday when a private bus travelling from Chamba to Una overturned near Nurpur on the Pathankot-Mandi National Highway. According to officials, the incident occurred around late morning after the vehicle reportedly lost control and overturned, injuring around 40 passengers on board.
At least four passengers, including the driver, are reported to be critically injured and were referred to Dr Rajendra Prasad Government Medical College, Tanda, for advanced treatment. Local residents, police personnel, and emergency responders carried out swift rescue operations, pulling passengers out of the overturned bus and shifting them to nearby hospitals.
Authorities have launched an investigation into the cause of the accident, with early indications pointing towards either a possible mechanical failure or driver-related health issues, though nothing has been officially confirmed yet.
Locals Join Swift Rescue Efforts
The accident took place near Nurpur when the private bus, operating on a long inter-district route between Chamba and Una, suddenly lost control while navigating a stretch of highway known for moderate traffic and variable road conditions.
Eyewitness accounts suggest that the bus overturned abruptly, leading to chaos and panic among passengers, many of whom were travelling for personal and work-related reasons. In the immediate aftermath, local residents were among the first to reach the site, helping to pull injured passengers out of the wreckage before emergency services arrived.
Police teams from the Nurpur station, along with ambulances and medical staff, quickly joined the rescue operation. Officials confirmed that around 40 passengers sustained injuries ranging from minor bruises to severe trauma. Several injured individuals were initially taken to the Civil Hospital in Nurpur, while those in critical condition were referred to Tanda Medical College for specialised treatment.
A senior police official stated that priority was given to stabilising the injured and ensuring that no delays occurred in medical assistance. Authorities also temporarily regulated traffic movement along the highway to facilitate rescue and clearance operations, as the overturned bus obstructed a section of the road.
Medical officials at the receiving hospitals reported that emergency teams were placed on alert soon after the accident was reported. While most passengers are said to be out of danger, the condition of a few remains critical, with doctors closely monitoring them. The administration has also stated that all necessary support, including coordination with families of the injured, is being provided.
Investigation Underway, Hilly Road Safety Concerns
Preliminary investigations are currently underway to determine the exact cause of the accident. Officials have not ruled out multiple possibilities, including mechanical failure, tyre burst, or a sudden health emergency faced by the driver, which may have led to the loss of control. The bus is being examined for technical faults, while statements are being recorded from survivors, witnesses, and transport personnel associated with the vehicle.
The Kangra district administration has reiterated that a detailed probe will be conducted, and appropriate action will be taken based on the findings. Transport authorities are also expected to review the maintenance records of the vehicle as part of standard procedure.
While Himachal Pradesh’s hilly roads are known for their scenic routes, they are also prone to accidents due to sharp curves, uneven terrain, and weather-related challenges, making road safety enforcement particularly crucial.
In recent years, the region has witnessed multiple similar incidents involving passenger buses, prompting repeated concerns about vehicle fitness checks, driver fatigue, and adherence to safety regulations. Officials have often emphasised the importance of stricter monitoring mechanisms, especially for long-route public transport vehicles operating in mountainous regions where response times can be critical.
The Logical Indian’s Perspective
This incident is yet another reminder of how fragile road safety remains in regions where geography, infrastructure, and human factors intersect under challenging conditions. While the prompt response by local residents, police, and medical teams likely prevented a greater tragedy, the fact that around 40 people were injured highlights systemic vulnerabilities that continue to persist in public transport safety.
Beyond immediate rescue efforts, there is a deeper need to strengthen preventive measures rather than relying primarily on emergency response. Regular and transparent vehicle fitness checks, stricter enforcement of passenger safety norms, and mandatory health monitoring for drivers operating long-distance and hilly routes could significantly reduce such incidents.
A bus en route from Chamba to Una reportedly met with an accident near Nurpur. Initial reports suggest the driver suffered a sudden heart attack, causing the vehicle to lose control and overturn.
