India’s women’s beach kabaddi team retained their Asian Beach Games 2026 title in Sanya, China, defeating Sri Lanka 47-31 in the final to secure a record sixth consecutive gold medal in the competition.

The men’s team finished with silver after losing 44-31 to Iran in the final. Both squads delivered strong group-stage performances and knockout wins, marking India’s first medals at this edition of the Games, held after a decade-long gap since the event’s last edition in 2016.

Women Win Sixth Gold; Men Silver

India’s women’s beach kabaddi team once again reaffirmed their continental dominance with a commanding performance throughout the tournament, culminating in a 47-31 win over Sri Lanka in the final held in Sanya, People’s Republic of China.

Led by skipper Ritu, the six-member squad which also included Manisha Kumari, Simran Kamboj, Manpreet Kaur, Nikita, and Nikita Chauhan showed composure and tactical superiority, particularly in the second half of the final, where they converted a narrow 20-18 half-time lead into a decisive victory.

Their campaign reflected consistent dominance from the outset. India topped Group A after defeating Sri Lanka 44-32 and Syria 64-22, before carrying their momentum into the semi-finals where they defeated Bangladesh 50-31.

The final victory not only secured India’s sixth consecutive gold medal in women’s beach kabaddi at the Asian Beach Games but also extended an unbeaten legacy across editions, reinforcing their position as the most successful side in the event’s history.

The men’s team, meanwhile, entered the final after a strong semi-final win over Pakistan (50-27), but were outplayed by a disciplined Iranian side in the summit clash. Trailing 23-11 at half-time, India could not recover in the second half and eventually lost 44-31, settling for silver for the second successive edition.

Group-Stage Strength, Final-Stage Contrast

Both Indian teams demonstrated depth and consistency during the group stages, with performances that suggested a strong medal challenge across the board. In the men’s category, India topped Group B with victories over Chinese Taipei (66-23), Thailand (52-32), and Sri Lanka (54-33), displaying attacking efficiency and defensive coordination. However, Iran, who dominated Group A, proved to be a significantly tougher challenge in the final, exposing gaps in India’s defensive transitions and raid conversions under pressure.

The women’s team, in contrast, maintained complete control throughout the tournament, rarely allowing opposition sides to build momentum. Their ability to maintain intensity across matches was evident in their semi-final win over Bangladesh and their decisive group-stage performances.

The men’s squad, led by Brijendra Singh Choudhary and including Jitendra Yadav, Yatharth Deshwal, Neeraj, Jai Bhagwan, and Bhanu Pratap Tomar, showed resilience in earlier matches but struggled to match Iran’s physicality and tactical discipline in the final.

India’s overall contingent of 31 athletes competed across four disciplines 3×3 basketball, beach kabaddi, sailing, and beach wrestling at an event that marked the return of the Asian Beach Games after a 10-year hiatus caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Asian Beach Games return after decade

The Asian Beach Games, organised by the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA), returned in 2026 after being delayed since 2016, when the last edition was held in Da Nang, Vietnam. Initially scheduled for 2020, the event was postponed due to the global pandemic, making this edition a significant return for coastal and beach-based sports across the continent. Since its inception in 2008 in Bali, Indonesia, the Games have provided a platform for emerging sports that are not always part of mainstream multi-sport competitions.

India’s women’s kabaddi team has historically been one of the most successful contingents in this event, maintaining an unbeaten gold medal streak since the discipline’s introduction. Their continued success reflects strong domestic structures in kabaddi and the sport’s deep cultural roots in India.

The men’s team, while consistently competitive at the Asian level, has found increasing resistance from countries such as Iran and Pakistan, both of whom have significantly improved their kabaddi programmes in recent years.

Officials associated with the Indian contingent acknowledged the importance of analysing performance gaps, particularly in high-pressure final matches, while also praising the women’s team for maintaining their dominance on the continental stage.

The Logical Indian’s Perspective

India’s double-medal performance in beach kabaddi at the Asian Beach Games 2026 presents a nuanced picture of sporting progress and evolving competition. The women’s team continues to be a symbol of sustained excellence, demonstrating how consistent investment, training continuity, and belief in women athletes can produce long-term success at the highest level. Their sixth consecutive gold medal is not just a sporting achievement but also a reflection of resilience and structured development in a discipline that often receives limited mainstream attention.

At the same time, the men’s team’s silver medal finish highlights the growing competitiveness of kabaddi across Asia and the need for India to continuously innovate its strategies, training methods, and talent pipeline. While defeat in the final may be disappointing, the journey to the summit clash itself showcased strong performances and fighting spirit.
