A 67-year-old grocery shop owner in Chhattisgarh was arrested on Monday for allegedly raping a young MBA student at her rented residence. The incident occurred when the accused, who had arrived to deliver groceries, exploited the victim’s hospitality.
After handing over the items, he requested a glass of water, and while the student was fetching it, he reportedly locked the door and sexually assaulted her. Local police acted swiftly following the survivor’s complaint, placing the elderly man in custody and initiating legal proceedings under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

The survivor, who had moved to the city to pursue her MBA, lived alone in a rented apartment and frequently ordered supplies from the accused’s shop. According to the investigating officer, “Finding her alone, he asked for water to drink after handing over the items. When the student went inside to fetch water, he allegedly locked the door and sexually assaulted her.”
