US President Donald Trump has dismissed allegations implied in a manifesto written by shooting suspect Cole Tomas Allen, who is accused of opening fire near the 2026 White House Correspondents’ Dinner in Washington, D.C., on April 25.
During a televised interview following the incident, Trump rejected language in Allen’s manifesto that referred to a “paedophile” and “rapist,” saying, “I didn’t rape anybody,” and calling the suspect a “radicalised,” “anti-Christian,” and “pretty sick guy.”
Authorities say Allen, a 31-year-old from Torrance, California, allegedly attempted to breach security at the event venue armed with multiple weapons before being subdued by security personnel. One officer was struck by gunfire but survived due to a bulletproof vest, and Trump along with other attendees was safely evacuated.
Investigators believe Allen had circulated a manifesto to family members minutes before the attack, outlining grievances against the Trump administration and listing officials as potential targets. Federal authorities, including the FBI and the Justice Department, are continuing to investigate the motive, while officials say the suspect appears to have acted alone.
Trump Denies Allegations, Criticises Suspect
The controversy surrounding the manifesto intensified after excerpts were referenced in an interview with Trump. In response, the US president forcefully denied the allegations implied in the document, saying he had “never raped anyone,” while accusing the suspect of spreading baseless claims.
Trump also described Allen as “radicalised,” “anti-Christian,” and mentally unstable, arguing that the language in the manifesto reflected extremist thinking rather than legitimate political criticism. Reports suggest the suspect’s writings contained harsh criticism of the Trump administration and suggested violent retaliation against those he believed were responsible for national and global injustices.
In the manifesto, Allen reportedly portrayed himself as acting on behalf of citizens who felt betrayed by political leadership. According to law-enforcement officials, the suspect attempted to rush through security screening outside the ballroom at the Washington Hilton, where thousands of journalists, politicians, and public figures had gathered for the annual gala.
Secret Service agents quickly intervened, exchanging gunfire before subduing him and placing him under arrest. Despite the tense situation, authorities confirmed that the president and other top officials including First Lady Melania Trump and Vice President JD Vance were moved to secure areas and remained unharmed.
Manifesto And Motive Under Investigation
Investigators say Allen sent a lengthy manifesto reportedly more than 1,000 words to members of his family about 10 minutes before the shooting. A relative alerted authorities after receiving the message, which outlined his motivations, described his grievances against the federal government, and reportedly listed high-ranking officials associated with the Trump administration as potential targets.
Officials believe Allen travelled across the United States by train in the days leading up to the incident before checking into the Washington Hilton hotel, where the dinner was being held. Law-enforcement sources say the suspect was armed with a shotgun, a handgun, and multiple knives when he attempted to force his way through the security checkpoint.
During the confrontation, one officer was hit by a bullet but survived because of a protective vest, and the suspect was eventually tackled and taken into custody. Authorities have since searched Allen’s home in California and examined his social media activity and background.
Early findings suggest he had expressed strong anti-Trump sentiments online, though investigators are still working to determine whether the attack was part of a broader ideological movement or the actions of a lone individual.
Acting US Attorney General Todd Blanche said investigators currently believe the suspect was attempting to target officials connected to the administration. The incident has also prompted questions about security arrangements at the high-profile event, which is traditionally attended by senior government leaders, journalists, and celebrities.
The Logical Indian’s Perspective
Political disagreements are an inevitable part of any democracy, but violence cannot become the language through which those disagreements are expressed. The attempted attack at a major public event attended by journalists and government officials serves as a stark reminder of how easily polarised political narratives can escalate into dangerous actions.
While allegations and counter-allegations between political actors often dominate headlines, the larger concern lies in the climate of hostility that can encourage individuals to believe violence is justified. Democracies rely on debate, accountability, and the rule of law not manifestos and firearms to address grievances and demand change.
