Pakistan Not a Suitable Intermediary, Says Iranian MP Amid Stalled Talks and Growing Regional Tensions

Iran signals diplomatic unease, arguing Pakistan’s perceived US alignment undermines its credibility as a neutral mediator.

Ebrahim Rezaei, spokesperson for Iran’s National Security and Foreign Policy Commission, has publicly questioned Pakistan’s suitability as a mediator in ongoing regional negotiations. While acknowledging Pakistan as a “good friend,” Rezaei argued that Islamabad lacks the necessary neutrality due to its perceived alignment with United States interests.

This development, shared via a statement on X, highlights a significant diplomatic friction point between the two neighbours at a time when impartial mediation is crucial for regional stability.

Concerns Over Neutrality & Credibility

The Iranian lawmaker’s critique hinges on the belief that a mediator must remain unbiased to be effective. “A mediator must be impartial, not always leaning to one side,” Rezaei stated, explicitly pointing to Pakistan’s reluctance to openly criticise Washington.

He further alleged that Islamabad has failed to hold the U.S. accountable for unfulfilled commitments regarding Lebanon and the issue of blocked assets. By describing Pakistan as a nation that “tends to align with US interests,” Rezaei suggests that Iran views Pakistan’s diplomatic involvement not as an independent bridge, but as one influenced by Western pressures.

A Complex Diplomatic Relationship

This scepticism emerges despite the long-standing, though often complex, bilateral ties between Tehran and Islamabad. Historically, Pakistan has frequently sought to play the role of a peacemaker between Iran and its regional rivals, as well as between Iran and the West, to prevent escalation in its backyard.

However, Rezaei’s remarks reflect a growing frustration within certain Iranian political circles regarding the “dual-track” nature of Pakistan’s foreign policy. This public dismissal of Pakistan’s mediatory role could complicate future diplomatic efforts aimed at resolving regional conflicts, especially those involving U.S. sanctions and Lebanese security.

The Logical Indian’s Perspective

At The Logical Indian, we believe that sustainable peace in the Middle East and South Asia can only be achieved through mediators who command the absolute trust of all parties involved. While strategic alliances are a reality of global politics, the essence of diplomacy lies in the courage to speak truth to power and uphold justice over partisan interests.

For regional harmony to prevail, it is imperative that neighbouring nations move beyond rhetoric and foster an environment of transparency and genuine neutrality. Only through empathy and unbiased dialogue can we hope to resolve decades-long tensions.
