In a significant shift of stance, U.S. President Donald Trump unilaterally announced an extension of the two-week ceasefire with Iran on Tuesday, pausing a threatened military strike. Despite previously stating he “expected to be bombing,” Trump extended the window for diplomacy following mediation requests from Pakistani leaders Asim Munir and Shehbaz Sharif.
While the U.S. maintains its naval blockade, the Iranian leadership has reacted with deep skepticism, dismissing the move as a tactical ploy. This development marks a critical, albeit fragile, moment in the escalating tensions surrounding the Strait of Hormuz, as the international community watches to see if a unified proposal for peace can emerge.
Mediation Amidst Military Readiness
The extension comes at a time when regional stability hung by a thread. President Trump clarified that the decision was a direct response to appeals for more time, stating, “We have been asked to hold our attack on the country of Iran until such time as their leaders and representatives can come up with a unified proposal.”
However, this is not a full withdrawal; the President has directed the U.S. Military to “continue the blockade” and remain “ready and able” to strike should discussions fail. Pakistan has welcomed the move, affirming its commitment to a negotiated settlement.
Conversely, an adviser to Iran’s Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf struck a defiant tone, warning that the extension is merely “a ploy to buy time for a surprise strike” and asserting that “the continuation of the siege must be met with a military response.”

The current standoff is rooted in long-standing friction over the Strait of Hormuz and recent U.S. military maneuvers at sea.
