Independent MP Rajesh Ranjan, popularly known as Pappu Yadav, has ignited a massive political firestorm following derogatory remarks claiming that 90% of women in politics begin their careers in “men’s bedrooms.” The statement, made during a debate regarding the failed 131st Constitutional (Amendment) Bill on women’s reservation, has drawn sharp condemnation from across the political spectrum.
Stakeholders including the BJP and the Bihar State Women’s Commission have demanded immediate accountability, while the MP defended his stance by claiming he was “exposing” systemic exploitation. The latest development sees a formal notice issued to Yadav, threatening a recommendation for his disqualification from the Lok Sabha.
The “Bedroom” Slur and Official Repercussions
The controversy erupted when Yadav suggested that women are viewed with “predatory intent” by politicians and that a culture of exploitation is deeply ingrained in the system. “90% of women cannot start in politics without going to a male leader’s room,” he stated, adding that while India “worships” women as goddesses, the reality is one of pervasive domestic violence and harassment.
The BJP was quick to react, with spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla calling the statement “vile” and “shocking,” asserting that it reflects a regressive mindset toward Nari Shakti (women power). Taking swift action, the Bihar State Women’s Commission issued a suo motu notice to the Purnia MP, seeking a response within three days.
The commission’s statement noted that such remarks “hurt women’s self-respect and social dignity” and questioned why his parliamentary membership should not be cancelled.

This incident is not the first time the Independent MP has been embroiled in controversy regarding his public statements. In early 2025, Yadav faced backlash for derogatory comments directed at President Droupadi Murmu, and more recently, he claimed in Parliament that over 700 MPs face allegations of sexual exploitation.
His latest outburst comes at a sensitive time, following the defeat of the Women’s Reservation Bill in the Lok Sabha last Friday. While Yadav framed his comments as a critique of a “vulture-like” political system that preys on women from schools to offices, critics argue that his choice of words serves only to further marginalise and shame women striving for leadership roles.
