A shocking lapse in medical ethics surfaced at the Bagaha Sub-divisional Hospital in Bihar’s West Champaran district, where a security guard was filmed stitching the wounds of a road accident victim. The incident, which went viral on social media, occurred due to the alleged absence of qualified medical personnel during an emergency.
While the hospital administration has acknowledged the “manpower crunch,” the event has sparked nationwide outrage over the precarious state of healthcare infrastructure in rural India.
Medical Ethics Under Siege
The video footage shows a man in a security uniform performing a surgical procedure stitching a deep laceration while the patient lies on a stretcher. According to local reports, the victim was rushed to the facility following a road accident, but no doctors or nurses were reportedly available in the emergency ward at that moment.
Addressing the controversy, the hospital’s Deputy Superintendent, Dr. K.B.N. Singh, stated, “We are facing a severe shortage of staff. However, a security guard performing a medical procedure is unacceptable. We have sought an explanation from the concerned staff and initiated an internal inquiry.”
A Systemic Crisis in Bihar’s Healthcare
This is not an isolated case of medical negligence in the region; it highlights a chronic deficiency in Bihar’s public health system. National health surveys frequently rank the state at the bottom regarding the doctor-to-patient ratio. In Bagaha specifically, residents have long complained about “referral-only” hospitals that lack the basic human resources to treat trauma cases.
This incident follows a string of similar reports from across the state where kin or Grade-IV employees have had to step in to perform duties meant for trained professionals, posing a grave risk to patient safety and infection control.
The Logical Indian’s Perspective
At The Logical Indian, we believe that healthcare is a fundamental right, not a privilege determined by one’s geography. It is deeply distressing to see a citizen’s life placed in the hands of untrained personnel due to systemic neglect. While we acknowledge the “manpower shortage,” it cannot be used as a shield to justify such life-threatening negligence.
True progress in our nation will only be achieved when our public institutions are bolstered by empathy, accountability, and adequate resources. We urge the Bihar government to move beyond “inquiries” and take concrete steps to fill medical vacancies so that no other patient has to suffer such a loss of dignity and safety.
