A woman alleges she was lured for her child’s treatment, drugged, assaulted, and silenced before police acted days later.

A woman was allegedly gang-raped by a Muslim cleric, Maulvi Junaid, and his associate, Nadeem, inside a mosque premises in Saharanpur, Uttar Pradesh, on April 15, 2026. The victim reported that she was lured to the location under the pretext of seeking spiritual healing for her ailing young son.

According to her statement, both she and her child were given sedative-laced water, after which the accused allegedly committed the assault and filmed the act to blackmail her. Following an initial delay and allegations of police apathy, senior officials intervened, leading to the arrest of both suspects on April 19

Betrayal of Faith and Heinous Abuse

The harrowing incident unfolded when a neighbour, Nadeem, convinced the victim that a local cleric could cure her son’s deteriorating health. Trusting the suggestion, she accompanied him to the mosque, where Maulvi Junaid allegedly administered “blessed” water that caused her and her child to lose consciousness.

“He told me that there was a cleric who would treat my child so that his health would never deteriorate again,” the victim recounted. Upon regaining consciousness, she discovered the horrific violation and was threatened with the release of a video recording if she spoke out.

While the victim alleged that local police initially pressured her into silence, Saharanpur’s senior police officials have since confirmed that both Junaid and Nadeem are in custody and are being questioned regarding the filmed evidence.

A Pattern of Silence and Systematic Delay

This case highlights a disturbing trend of administrative hurdles faced by survivors of sexual violence when seeking immediate justice. Reports indicate that the victim and her husband faced significant resistance at the local police station for nearly four days before the matter reached higher authorities.

It was only after a formal complaint was submitted to the Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) that an FIR was registered and the arrests were made. This delay not only allowed the accused time to intimidate the family further but also points to a recurring lapse in the implementation of “Zero FIR” protocols intended to protect survivors in the immediate aftermath of such crimes.

The Logical Indian’s Perspective

At The Logical Indian, we believe that places of worship and spiritual guidance should be sanctuaries of safety and compassion, not sites of exploitation and trauma. Such incidents are a stain on our collective humanity and underscore the urgent need to dismantle the culture of silence that often protects perpetrators in positions of perceived authority.

We stand for a society where justice is swift and where no survivor is turned away from a police station or intimidated into withdrawal. True harmony can only exist when the vulnerable are protected and the law holds every individual accountable, regardless of their social or religious standing.
