US-Iran Tensions Rise: Trump Says Bombing Could Resume If Nuclear Deal Talks Fail

With the ceasefire nearing expiry, the US warns of renewed strikes while Iran signals possible disruption to global oil routes if tensions escalate.

US President Donald Trump has warned that the United States could resume bombing Iran if ongoing negotiations fail before the current ceasefire expires next week. Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One, Trump said the US naval blockade on Iranian ports would remain in place and suggested military strikes could restart if a deal addressing Iran’s nuclear programme is not reached in time.

While expressing cautious optimism that diplomacy might succeed, Trump reiterated that preventing Iran from developing nuclear weapons remains Washington’s top priority. Meanwhile, Iran has reopened the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial global oil route, but warned that the waterway could be shut again if the US blockade continues raising concerns over regional stability, energy security, and the fragile ceasefire now in place.

Trump Warns Of Escalation

Speaking to journalists while returning to Washington, Trump said negotiations between the United States and Tehran would continue over the weekend but warned that the outcome remained uncertain. When asked what would happen if a deal was not reached before the ceasefire expires, he replied: “Maybe I won’t extend it the blockade is going to remain and unfortunately we’ll have to start dropping bombs again.”

The remarks underline the pressure Washington is placing on Tehran during the negotiations. Trump also reiterated that the United States would not compromise on its core objective of preventing Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons. “The main thing is that Iran will not have a nuclear weapon… that supersedes everything else,” he said, adding that if diplomacy fails the outcome could come “in a much more unfriendly form.”

Despite the tough warning, Trump attempted to strike an optimistic tone, saying he believed a diplomatic breakthrough was possible. “I think it’s going to happen,” he told reporters, referring to the prospect of a deal. However, he also confirmed that the US naval blockade targeting Iranian ports would remain fully enforced until negotiations produce a final agreement.

Hormuz Reopens Amid Regional Tensions

The diplomatic standoff comes amid a delicate moment in West Asia’s security landscape. Iran recently announced the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, through which roughly 20 per cent of the world’s oil supply passes, offering temporary relief to global energy markets. However, Iranian officials have warned that the strait could be closed again if the US continues its blockade on Iranian shipping and ports.

The blockade itself was launched earlier this month and is being enforced by a significant US military presence, including warships and aircraft monitoring maritime traffic near Iranian waters. The measure specifically targets vessels entering or leaving Iranian ports, although US officials say commercial ships travelling through the strait to other destinations are not being obstructed.

Questions also remain about how freely ships can navigate the strategic waterway. Iranian authorities have suggested that vessels may require approval from the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, and there have been discussions about potential tolls or restrictions an idea Trump rejected outright when asked by reporters.

The tensions are unfolding alongside a wider regional conflict involving Israel, Iran-backed groups and other actors across West Asia. The violence in recent weeks has reportedly killed thousands across Iran and Lebanon and has also resulted in casualties among US service members, underscoring the human cost of the escalating confrontation.

Diplomatic efforts are continuing behind the scenes, with several countries attempting to mediate discussions between Washington and Tehran. Earlier rounds of talks reportedly lasted more than 20 hours but ended without a breakthrough, with Iran’s nuclear programme remaining the key point of disagreement.

The Logical Indian’s Perspective

The unfolding crisis between the United States and Iran once again highlights how fragile peace can be in regions already shaped by decades of conflict and geopolitical rivalry. While concerns about nuclear weapons and national security are serious and deserve attention, the language of threats and renewed bombing risks pushing the situation toward further escalation. History has repeatedly shown that wars rarely deliver long-term stability; instead, they deepen humanitarian crises, displace communities, and destabilise entire regions.

Diplomacy, however slow and imperfect, remains the most responsible path forward. Constructive dialogue, transparent negotiations, and international cooperation offer a chance to resolve disputes without adding to the cycle of violence that has already cost thousands of lives. As the ceasefire deadline approaches and negotiations continue, the world will be watching closely to see whether leaders choose confrontation or compromise.
