What was meant to be a joyful week of wedding celebrations turned into a horrific ordeal in northeast Delhi after a 21-year-old bride-to-be was allegedly attacked with acid by a 26-year-old woman who was reportedly in a relationship with the same man she was about to marry.

The incident took place around 12:30 pm on April 14 in the Indira Vihar area under the Gokalpuri police station jurisdiction, just days before the victim’s wedding scheduled for April 19. According to police, the accused attended the pre-wedding mehendi ceremony at the victim’s house and allegedly threw acid on her face during the gathering.

The victim sustained severe burn injuries and was rushed to Guru Teg Bahadur (GTB) Hospital, where doctors say she remains under observation. Delhi Police have arrested the accused and registered a case under Section 124(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, which deals with causing grievous hurt using acid. Investigators are examining the source of the acid and the sequence of events leading up to the attack.

Mehendi Ceremony Turns Into Scene Of Panic

According to police sources, the attack unfolded during a mehendi ceremony being held at the victim’s residence in Indira Vihar, where friends and relatives had gathered for the pre-wedding ritual. The accused woman reportedly entered the house and blended into the celebrations without raising suspicion. Witnesses said she was even speaking with the bride-to-be about the ceremony before suddenly opening a bottle believed to contain acid and throwing it directly at the victim’s face.

The sudden assault sent the house into chaos as the victim screamed in pain and family members rushed to help her. Relatives immediately tried to control the situation and reportedly caught the accused at the spot before informing the police. By the time officers from Gokalpuri police station reached the location, the injured woman had already been rushed to Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital by her family.

Doctors treating the victim confirmed that she suffered burns on her face and other parts of her body, including her eyes, neck and hand. Medical teams have placed her under close observation as they assess the extent of the injuries. Police officials said the accused has been apprehended and is currently being questioned while investigators continue to gather evidence and statements from witnesses who were present during the ceremony.

Love Triangle Angle Emerges In Investigation

Preliminary investigations suggest the alleged attack may have been motivated by jealousy and opposition to the impending marriage. According to police, the accused woman had reportedly been in a relationship with the groom-to-be for several years and was unhappy about his decision to marry someone else. Officials believe this emotional conflict may have triggered the violent act.

Investigators also suspect the attack may have been premeditated. Police sources indicated that the accused allegedly concealed the acid in a bottle before arriving at the house, allowing her to enter the gathering without drawing attention. The fact that she managed to participate in the ceremony before launching the attack suggests the act may have been planned in advance.

Following the incident, an FIR was registered under Section 124(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita at Gokalpuri police station. A forensic team visited the scene to collect evidence and examine the surroundings. Authorities are now trying to determine where the acid used in the crime was obtained, an important aspect of the investigation given that the retail sale of acid in India is supposed to be strictly regulated.

The Supreme Court had issued directions in 2013 to regulate the sale of acid in order to curb such attacks, requiring vendors to maintain detailed records of buyers and restrict sales to adults who present valid identification. Despite these rules, incidents involving corrosive substances continue to surface across the country, raising concerns about enforcement and accessibility.

The Logical Indian’s Perspective

Acid attacks represent one of the most devastating forms of violence, leaving survivors with lifelong physical scars and deep psychological trauma. While the alleged motive in this case appears to stem from personal conflict and jealousy, no disagreement or emotional turmoil can ever justify such irreversible harm.

Beyond legal accountability, there is also a collective responsibility to support survivors and build communities rooted in empathy, respect, and dialogue. Education, awareness, and strong institutional safeguards are essential to prevent personal disputes from escalating into life-altering crimes.
