A 19-year-old college student, Sia Guleria, was brutally killed in broad daylight on April 13 while on her way to college in the Gopalpur area of Sarkaghat in Mandi district. Police said the accused, identified as 36-year-old Vikas Patiyal from the same village, allegedly attacked her with a sharp weapon around 9-9:30 am near a bus stop while she was heading to college.

Villagers later tracked him down hiding in nearby fields and handed him over to police. Confirming the arrest, Mandi Superintendent of Police Vinod Kumar said a murder case has been registered and the accused is currently being interrogated, with the motive still under investigation.

A local court has remanded the accused to police custody until April 16 as investigators attempt to recover the weapon and establish the exact sequence of events. The incident has sparked protests, political reactions and renewed concerns about women’s safety and the rising drug problem in the region.

Daylight Attack On College Student

According to police officials, Guleria, a resident of Nain village, was walking towards a bus stop around 9 am to travel to her college in Sarkaghat when she was intercepted by the accused. Eyewitness accounts and preliminary findings suggest the attacker struck her repeatedly with a sharp-edged weapon, targeting her neck, head and hands as she tried to defend herself. The assault was so brutal that she collapsed on the road and died on the spot before help could reach her.

The shocking nature of the crime triggered panic in the area. Residents who heard about the attack quickly alerted the police, following which officers from Sarkaghat police station rushed to the spot along with forensic teams to secure the crime scene and gather evidence.

SP Vinod Kumar said the police had collected material evidence and were examining call detail records and other leads to establish the motive behind the killing. “The accused has been arrested and is being questioned. We will recover the weapon used in the crime and produce him before the court after further investigation,” he said.

Police sources indicated that the accused allegedly fled into nearby fields and forest areas immediately after the attack. However, villagers joined the search effort and eventually located him hiding near a wheat field. Reports said angry locals caught him, thrashed him and later handed him over to the police. The accused was subsequently produced before a local court, which remanded him to police custody to facilitate detailed interrogation and evidence collection.

Outrage, Protests And Political Reactions

The brutal killing has triggered widespread shock and anger across Sarkaghat and neighbouring areas. Guleria’s last rites were performed in her native village on Tuesday, where a large number of residents gathered to pay their respects to the young student.

Meanwhile, protest demonstrations were held at Sarkaghat Park by several student organisations and civil groups demanding swift justice and stronger action against the drug menace in the region. Participants reportedly included members of organisations such as the Students’ Federation of India (SFI), Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) and the National Students’ Union of India (NSUI), along with local trade groups and social organisations.

Political leaders across party lines also reacted to the incident. Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu assured that strict action would be taken against the accused and directed the police to ensure a thorough investigation. Expressing grief over the incident, he said the government would ensure that the perpetrator receives severe punishment under the law and that the victim’s family would be supported.

Meanwhile, opposition leader and former chief minister Jai Ram Thakur criticised the state government, alleging that the incident reflected deteriorating law-and-order conditions and rising insecurity for women. The killing also sparked a wider debate about the alleged rise of drug abuse in parts of Himachal Pradesh, with several local leaders and activists linking the crime to the growing drug problem among youth in the region.

Senior officials and institutions also condemned the incident. Kavinder Gupta described the crime as “heinous, inhuman and deeply disturbing” and sought a detailed report from acting Director General of Police Ashok Tiwari. Vidya Negi also called for a speedy investigation and strict action against the accused, stressing the urgent need to ensure safety for women in public spaces.

The Logical Indian’s Perspective

The tragic killing of a young student on her way to college is not only a deeply disturbing crime but also a reminder of the vulnerabilities many women continue to face in public spaces across the country. The brutality of the incident has shaken the local community and highlights the urgent need for stronger safeguards, early intervention against harassment or stalking, and sustained efforts to address deeper social issues such as substance abuse and gender-based violence.

While the police investigation must proceed swiftly and fairly, preventing such tragedies requires more than legal action alone. Communities, educational institutions, law enforcement agencies and policymakers must work together to create safer public environments where young people especially women can pursue education and opportunities without fear.
