A 30-year-old Delhi woman, identified as Hina alias Mubbasreen, has been arrested in Uttar Pradesh’s Baghpat district after a police constable accused her of coercing him into religious conversion and marriage through threats and blackmail, officials said.
The case was registered at Khekra police station after constable Shrikant, posted with Dial 112 services, alleged that the woman pressured him to convert his religion and marry her, threatening to implicate him in a rape case if he refused. According to the complaint, the alleged coercion began after the two met during his posting in Ghaziabad.
The constable further claimed that the woman arranged for his conversion at a mosque in Delhi and continued to blackmail and extort money from him even after the alleged marriage. Police have arrested the accused and produced her before a court, which has remanded her to judicial custody, while authorities continue to investigate the allegations and examine the sequence of events leading to the complaint.
Police Probe Conversion, Coercion Allegations
According to the First Information Report (FIR), the constable alleged that his acquaintance with the accused began several years ago while he was posted in Ghaziabad. Over time, he claimed, the woman began pressuring him to change his religion and enter into a marriage with her.
When he resisted, he alleged that she threatened to file a rape case against him, which he said created fear of legal consequences and damage to his reputation. The complaint states that the woman allegedly took him to a mosque in Delhi where documents related to religious conversion were prepared and urged him to take part in religious activities, including joining a Jamaat.
Police officials say the allegations also include prolonged blackmail and mental harassment. Confirming the development, Additional Superintendent of Police Praveen Singh Chauhan said that a case has been registered under relevant provisions of the Uttar Pradesh Prohibition of Unlawful Conversion of Religion Act, the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act and the Information Technology Act. Investigators say the woman was arrested on Saturday and produced before a court.
Earlier Dispute And Financial Allegations
Some reports indicate that the dispute may also be linked to an earlier case filed by the woman against the constable. According to the complainant’s account, the accused had previously lodged a rape complaint against him in 2021. He has alleged that she later promised to support him legally and give a favourable statement in that case if he agreed to convert to Islam and marry her.
The constable further claimed that he complied with her demands due to pressure and fear of legal repercussions, but the situation did not improve afterwards. Instead, he alleged that the woman and some associates continued to demand money from him under the pretext of helping him resolve the case.
In his complaint, he claimed that he was forced to pay significant sums reportedly amounting to several lakhs of rupees while the alleged blackmail and intimidation continued.
Police officials have not yet independently verified these claims and say the investigation is ongoing to establish the exact timeline, the authenticity of the alleged conversion documents, and whether other individuals were involved in the alleged coercion and financial transactions.
The Logical Indian’s Perspective
Cases involving allegations of coercion, blackmail and forced religious conversion are deeply sensitive and must be handled with careful, impartial investigation. While the law must act firmly if wrongdoing or exploitation is established, it is equally important to ensure that due process is followed and that facts are verified thoroughly before conclusions are drawn.
Such incidents can easily be framed in ways that inflame social divisions or reinforce stereotypes, which makes responsible reporting and transparent investigation crucial. In a diverse society like India, protecting individual freedom including the freedom to choose one’s faith and partner must go hand in hand with ensuring that coercion, intimidation or misuse of the law does not occur.
